The Day the Furniture Quit!

Earlier this term, our classroom was turned upside down, literally! As part of our persuasive writing unit, students arrived to discover that all the classroom furniture had gone on holiday. Chairs, tables and shelves were pushed aside, leaving behind a letter explaining that they felt overworked, unappreciated and needed a break.

Inspired by the picture book The Day the Crayons Quit, students eagerly took on the challenge of responding to the furniture’s complaints. Using persuasive techniques they had been learning such as emotive language, strong arguments and rhetorical questions, they wrote convincing letters persuading the furniture to return to the classroom.

The day was filled with creativity, laughter and impressive writing as students worked to win back their chairs and tables. Thankfully, their persuasive words did the trick and the furniture returned the next day feeling much more appreciated.
