Year Six - Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

Dear Families,

Our students ended the term on a high note with yet another exciting event – the Inter-School Sports Competition. It was a thrilling showcase of talent, determination and teamwork as our athletes gave their best in every game. Their exemplary sportsmanship, commitment and unwavering team spirit were truly commendable. From intense matches to moments of camaraderie, the event not only highlighted their athletic skills but also reinforced the values of perseverance and mutual respect. It was a fitting conclusion to a term filled with hard work and achievements.

This week we learnt about...

Religious Education Focus:

This week students learnt about Palm Sunday and its significance in the life of Jesus and our faith. Students learnt the key events of Palm Sunday. They understood the meaning of Jesus entry into Jerusalem. They linked the events of Palm Sunday with Scripture and applied its message to their own lives. They learnt about the Holy week and the events leading up to Easter.  They reflected on the meaning of Good Friday and the love and sacrifice shown by Jesus.

English Focus:

Reading:

This term, students have been answering assessments in Reading. They reviewed several reading tools, vocabulary and grammar. They read sentences in homophones and spelt words. They reviewed the relationship between a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase, and other words in a sentence. They learnt that prepositions are often used to show relationships of place and time. Through their reading in fluency and focus groups, they have explored key themes and responded to thought-provoking questions from the text.

Writing:

Our students wrote their persuasive writing assessment over the course of the week. There were four topics they could choose from, and they got to decide whether to argue for or against the topic. The week’s writing lessons were spent writing and editing their work.

Mathematics Focus:

This week, students have been focusing on calculating the start time of an event to the minute. They used a number line to count backwards from the finish time to the start time. They found the start time of an event when given the finish time and elapsed time to the minute. They calculated the start time of an event when the elapsed time crosses midday.

Integrated Studies Focus

Our exploration of Federation continues as we examine its impact on Australia and how it shaped the nation we live in today. Students are engaging in discussions and activities to deepen their understanding of this significant historical event.

Social & Emotional Learning Focus

Students learnt to identify character strengths in fictional characters and understand how these strengths are shown through their actions.

Auslan Focus

In Auslan, students learnt that each sign has a specific handshape, location and movement and therefore if you change any one of these features you can change what the sign means. They produced meaningful signs by altering the handshape, location and movement of signs.

Kind regards,

The Year 6 Team
