Early in the term, Year 10 Visual Art students spent part of a double lesson, taking in the sights and sounds of Enoggera Creek. A sudden downpour didn’t dampen their spirits and added to the overall experience, which saw students looking closely at the environment to consolidate their knowledge of the elements of design from the photographs they were tasked to capture (based on line, colour, texture, shape, space and tone).
We congratulate our first “Artwork of the Month” winner, Year 10 student Marley Carroll for his mixed media artwork, based on the natural and built environment, inspired by Brisbane artist, Jacqui Scotcher and making use of some of the photos he took whilst at the creek.
In a broth of vinegar, green tea, onion skins, rusty tools and eucalyptus leaves, Year 11 students learnt how to create natural dye to create some organic effects on paper. From this paper, they developed an experimental artist book, for their current unit of work, “Art as Lens”. Earlier in the term the Year 11 class visited the Gallery of Modern Art to view the Asia Pacific Triennial exhibition, a highlight of the GOMA calendar every three years. This year they observed the work of 70 contemporary artists exhibited from 30 countries around the Asia-Pacific region. The visit informed their written response for the “Art as lens” unit.
Art Club kicked off in Week 3. This term students created some mosaic artworks which included coasters and tea light candles. Art Club runs every Tuesday afternoon from 3:15pm – 4:15pm in A03, with each term focusing on a different project. Next term in Art Club, students will be making Rokkaku Dako (Japanese Fighter kites) and we look forward to seeing the colourful kites that the boys produce. Art Club is also an opportunity for students who are studying Visual Art to access the art rooms and art materials and equipment to catch up on work outside of class time. Please email Ms Larsen for more information or to sign up for next term (larsenc@marash.qld.edu.au). All students are welcome. Art Club will recommence in Week 2 next term.
