The School Holidays are here—a perfect time for children to relax, spend time with friends, play outdoors, and enjoy some free time. It’s also an opportunity to take a well-deserved break from school work while embracing the joy of learning in a fun and engaging way.
One of the most valuable skills we can nurture is reading, and we encourage students to keep reading during the holidays. To make it more exciting, we’ve organised a Holiday Reading Challenge for Grades K-2 and 3-6. Students who complete the challenge will have the chance to win a prize!
Remember, reading doesn’t have to mean just books—reading aloud to your child, listening to audio books, exploring e-books, or diving into graphic novels and magazines all contribute to developing literacy skills. Reading for just 10 minutes a day can reignite a love for stories while strengthening their abilities. After all, learning is a shared responsibility between school and home.
Here are some ideas to make holiday reading more enjoyable:
● Visit Local Libraries: With eight libraries across the Sutherland Shire, you’ll find plenty of holiday activities to explore. Don't miss out on the Summer Reading Challenge in December and January (let us know if you decide to participate!). Borrow books, and discover the Story Box Library and online readers available.
● Explore School Subscriptions: Children in K-6 have access to Decodable Readers Australia, a fantastic resource forbuilding reading skills. They can also use the SORA online library, which they’ve been introduced to during ICT lessons. Please refer to the provided link for detailed borrowing instructions.
● Create Family Reading Time: Incorporate reading into your daily holiday routine and set an example by reading alongside your children.
● Set Up a Reading Nook: Design a cozy, inviting space at home where your child can enjoy their reading adventures. If students are completing the Premiers Reading Challenge this is a great way to read and log some more books.
Wishing you a wonderful Easter holiday filled with relaxation, joy, and plenty of good books. Happy reading!
