TERM 1 Sport
It has been a term full of sports events and it has been great to see so many students come away with ribbons and medals at District, Division & Region events. Thank you to all the parents who have given up their time to help and support the students in all the sport events this term. I hope you all have a great break and see you all in term 2 for Cross Country on Tuesday 29th April and Grade 6 Inter School Sport.
Northern Metropolitan Region Swimming Championships
On Thursday 20th March, 21 students headed to Watermarc for the NMR Swimming Championships. 5 students competed in individual events and 5 teams swam in the 4x50m freestyle relay events. They went to the Championships knowing the relay teams were seeded 1st, 2nd or 3rd fastest and the students who were swimming individual events were in the fastest heat. To qualify for State they had to finish with the fastest time out of the 2 heats. State qualification wasn’t out of reach but the goal was to just swim their best and hopefully all leave with a medal.
The day started off with a bang with Henry F first competing in the 9/10 Boys 50m Freestyle and winning the event with 2.5 second PB. Brendan L was up next in the 11 Boys 50 Freestyle, he also swam a PB. He finished 4th missing out on 3rd place by 2 tenths of a second. Elle W was the final competitor in the freestyle events, swimming in the 11 Girls 50m Freestyle. Elle W was swimming against a girl who was seeded with a time of 30.81 secs at Region so she knew it was going be a quick race. Elle finished 6th overall with a time of 37.13 seconds.
On to the backstroke and Henry F was up again. He was seeded 1st and for half the race it was neck and neck with the swimmer who had been seeded 2nd fastest. The 2nd seed found another gear and pulled away from Henry in the last 15m. The race finished with a new record being set and Henry finishing 2nd behind a very quick backstroke swimmer.
In the breaststroke events we had Sophia M and Kevin I swimming their respective age groups. Sophia, a self-taught breaststroke swimmer a year ago was up first in the 9/10 girls and was seeded 3rd fastest. She swam a superb race and there was no doubt she was in the running for a medal. Sophia finished 3rd. The progress she has made in 12 months is nothing short of amazing. Kevin I swam in the 11 boys, he knew coming into the race he was swimming against a very strong field and it was going to take a very special swim to finish in the top 3. Alex finished 6th overall, also swimming a PB.
Butterfly was the last of the individual events. Elle W had her second and final event of the day. Again, Elle was swimming against a group of girls who were very quick. She swam a PB and finished in 6th overall.
The final events were the 4x50m Freestyle Relays. All of the relays were seeded either 1st, 2nd or 3rd fastest so the students knew everyone had a good chance to leave with a medal.
The 9/10 girls were up first, seeded 2nd fastest and facing their division competitors Ivanhoe Grammar who were 9 seconds faster. The 2 schools seeded 3rd and 4th were only a second or two slower. The girls swam well but unfortunately didn’t end up with a medal this year however they should be proud of themselves for finishing 4th fastest after 2 heats. Next year girls you’ll get that medal.
The 9/10 boys were next and seeded 1st fastest by 4.5 seconds. With State qualification not out of reach the boys had to swim their best race yet. Ivanhoe Grammar who we beat at Division went 8 seconds quicker this time around and beat us by 4 seconds. The boys finished 2nd after 2 heats.
The 11 boys also seeded 1st but by only a second needed to swim another PB this week to earn that spot at State as the difference between 1, 2 and 3 was 1 second. The eventual winners, 3rd fastest seed, ended up taking the spot. The boys finished 2nd, edging out Ivanhoe East again but by a bigger margin.
Next up was the 12 girls. 2 of the team had been part of the 11 year old girls relay who swam at State last year. They were seeded 3rd fastest and knew it was going to need a big swim from all of them to finish 1st. The girls were in the top 4 throughout however the 1st and 2nd seed were just too quick and the battle for 3rd and a medal was on. The girls were slightly in front and in 3rd on the final changeover and with 10m to go it was looking like the girls were going to be on the podium. The girls edged out 4th place who were chasing them down to finish 3rd.
The final event of the day was the 12 boys freestyle relay. The boys had been to State Swimming for the past 2 years, and were going for the 3peat. A loss of goggles at Division had the boys finishing 2nd for the first time and so went into Region seeded 2nd. The boys were well prepared and ready to prove their State credentials. The changeovers and the swim from each of the boys was brilliant had the boys finished well in front, securing their place at State for the third year in a row.
District Athletics
On Thursday 27th March 72 students made the trip to Willinda Park Athletics track to compete in the Heidelberg District Athletics Carnival. It was successful day with many students coming away with ribbons. The competition seemed to be tougher this year which is great for our District and for the students at HPS as it gives them something to work towards next year if they want to compete at Division Athletics. There were some disappointed students who have been attending Division and Region Athletics for the past couple of years who just missed out on qualifying for Division in Term 3. If one of these students is your children, then please reiterate to them that I was extremely proud of everyone’s effort and attitude on the day, it could not be faulted, unfortunately that is just sport.

Heidelberg District Girls AFL9s Tournament
Yesterday 24 grade 5 & 6 girls played in the first Heidelberg District AFL9s Tournament. There were approximately 120 girls from 6 schools playing in the tournament with the eventual winner qualifying for the Banyule Division Tournament in Term 3. Our girls were split into 2 teams, the Hawks and the Honey Badgers. The Hawks played 5 games, winning 4 and losing 1 (against St Martin of Tours – the District Champions). The Honey Badgers played 4 games, winning 2 and losing 2. The girls had a lot of fun and were very competitive in all of their games. Thank you to Luke Nedelkos from Banyule Primary School for organising the day and AFL Victoria and SEDA for umpiring the tournament.
