Year 5/6 News

It has been nice to hear all of the stories about what students got up to in the holiday break and they should be proud the way in which they have started Term 2.
Students have taken part in some readings about the meaning of ANZAC Day and were immersed in the significance of commemorating all that ANZAC Day signifies. Students also wrote letters from the perspective of someone who was serving during World War 1. In these letters they were able to demonstrate their understanding of the sacrifice made by those who have served the Nation.
This week we have started our modelled text 'Black Cockatoo' by Carl Merrison & Hakea Hustler. The story follows a young Aboriginal girl as she explores the fragile connections of family and culture. Students will complete a variety of reading response tasks as they continue to explore the concepts covered in the text.
In maths, students have been working in targeted groups to investigate and explore a range of measurement strategies. They also had some fun using measurement techniques to make ANZAC biscuits and reflecting on the importance of following instructions and correctly using formal units of measurement.
On Thursday the school captains attended the GRIP Leadership Conference in Bendigo. GRIP stands for Generosity, Responsibility, Integrity and People and is an organisation that concentrates specifically on training student leaders for their role. The goal is for students to leave the conference with a clear vision, a solid understanding and lots of ideas for their time as a leader. Thank you to Mrs Duffy for taking the school captains to this event and providing them with such a fantastic opportunity.
Please see on XUNO the Term 2 weekly timetables for Grade 5/6A and 5/6B. Looking forward to a great term!
