LS3 Seniors trying out the new keyboards in Music Specialist classes this week

SWAP SPECIALISTS:  JUNIORS

After a wonderful performance in the Junior School production of “Destination Regulation” and lots of rehearsals, we have all enjoyed returning to our regular SWAP specialists.

During SWAP (Student Wellbeing and Performing), we learn about wellbeing concepts through the drama curriculum. We played a warm up game called “Elephant”.

The children stood in a circle with the teacher in the middle. When the teacher pointed to

a student and called out a character, the child who was pointed to and the two children either side of them, had to make the pose of the character and the noise to match. For “Elephant” the child in the middle stood with their arm up like a trunk. The other 2 children made their arms into the ears on either side of the elephant. They made a noise of an elephant.

When the teacher called out “Palm trees”, the child who was pointed to stood tall with their arms up above their head, while the two children on either side of the trunk were the branches. They made the sound of wind in the leaves “swoosh”.

When the teacher called out “Jelly” the two children either side of the child pointed to, put their arms around the outside of the middle child to make the bowl. The child in the middle was the jelly and had to move their body around while making a “wibble wobble” sound.

We also played the game “Fruit Salad”. While the children had a lot of fun playing this game, they learnt some important messages from this game. It is important to be able to mix with anyone in this group. Everyone is important and valued regardless of difference between people.

In the gameeach child was named as strawberry, apple or banana. They were asked to remember their fruit name, but point out that they all belong to the category ‘Fruit Salad’.

The leader stood in the centre of the circle. They did not have a chair. When they called out the name of one of the fruits, all players of that category moved to a different chair. (E.g. on the call of ‘banana’, all bananas must leave their chairs and find a different chair.) At this time the leader rushed to a chair and the last person left without a chair made the next call in the game. The next person  then made a new call. When the category of ‘Fruit Salad’ was called, all players found a new chair. We played a few rounds of the game and the children were sitting in mixed positions. After playing the game, I pointed out that  we all share the category ‘people’ just as the strawberry, apple and banana all share the category ‘fruit salad’. In our class, all people are included and respected regardless of any differences between them.

SWIMMING

Our swimming program is running smoothly. I would like to thank all our staff for their organisation and commitment that helps the swimming lessons to run smoothly. I would also like to thank the instructors at Casey Race. They were extremely organised and everything ran like clockwork. Finally a big thanks to our Junior parents who were able to come and assist in the change rooms after the swimming lessons.

A reminder to all parents you are most welcome to come and watch, however we ask that you do not take photos or videos at the pool and only parents I have spoken to and debriefed are allowed to assist in the junior change rooms after the swimming lessons.

A reminder to parents that swimming will continue next week and the details are as follows:

Monday 30th October – LS1 Seniors, LS1 Juniors, LS2 Juniors

Tuesday 31st October – LS3 Juniors, LS3 Seniors, LS2 Seniors

There are no changes to the swimming program next week so we hope that all students will bring their swimming gear so that office staff do not have to ring parents.

Students will need to wear their bathers under their sports uniform and bring a plastic bag with their towel, undergarments and thongs. Students will wear thongs to and from the pool to make changing easier and then put their socks and shoes back on once they return to school.

Swimming timetables have been uploaded onto the Operoo permission form as an attachment. Please print it off and ensure you have it available at home as swimming days change for the different Learning Spaces. Timetables are now in PDF format and can be downloaded on mobile phones. I will place reminders in Morning Reminders, the newsletter and through our app each week. We would like students to come ready for swimming each week, without placing the extra burden on the office staff of having to ring parents to bring swimming items because students have forgotten them.

SENIOR SPORTS

Grade 5 Bike Education

Please give your permission for your child to participate in the Bike Ed program via Operoo and ensure your child’s medical profile is up to date. Please also indicate on Operoo if your child does not have a bicycle and helmet. You will also need to print off and complete the two safety check documents, sign and return to your child’s Home Group teacher. The due date for this has already passed.

Each child will require a bicycle in safe working order and an approved helmet that fits correctly and is in good condition. You will need to complete a bike safety check and we request your cooperation in having any necessary repairs, adjustments or replacements made promptly. You will also need to complete a helmet and riding gear safety check and it is essential that your child’s bicycle helmet fits comfortably and securely and that the polystyrene foam liner is undamaged. Forms for these safety checks are attached to the Operoo document for you to print. Your child must have footwear that has closed toes and firm, non-slip soles such as runners.

If at any stage you have any queries or issues please do not hesitate to contact me on gfaiola@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au
