Inspiring Art!

Here are some photos of the wonderful art done during the Wanyara Paint sessions, inspired by aboriginal symbols and stories. Students were encouraged to create their own story using paint pens and their choice of symbols. Our learning about indigenous art will be interwoven into the art program over the next few weeks and will continue to influence our future programming, with student stories, connections, voice as central. You are welcome to come and see these inspiring artworks currently in the stadium.

There were a few classes that missed a session due to circumstances beyond our control. These sessions will be made up on Thursday 16th November.

Performing Arts: Dance and Yarn with Wanyara

Our usual program gave way to the Wanyara indigenous incursion last week, as students embraced the opportunity to engage with first nations culture through Yarn and Dance, ancient methods for the transference of knowledge, memory and story. These sessions added invaluably to students' understanding of how culture is preserved, developed and passed down the generations, through performance traditions both ancient and contemporary.

Physical Education Update:

The students thoroughly enjoyed their ‘play’ experience during our week-long Wanyara Incursion. Traditionally Indigenous games were designed to teach important life skills including coordination, aiming, agility and control.  Some of the games the year levels learnt were…

Jumpinpin – This game originated from Stradbroke Island and was traditionally played to teach kids how to spear fish. The students encouraged playing the game and likened it to many other tag games they were familiar with.

Pulogo – A favourite amongst the students this was a mock war game that took play all over Australia within mobs. The game was often played to settle disputes, real or imaginary. Players needed to take sash tags off each other, aiming not to lose their own tags.

This week in Mandarin:

Grade 5s are continuing to work on their travel plans. They will be learning how to type in Chinese characters in order to rewrite and present their travel plan in a ppt format.

Last week as a special treat, a couple of our Grade 2 classes got to experience a Mandarin session. They learnt names of colours in Mandarin and enjoyed singing the Mandarin colour song and a colouring activity. They were able to use the prompts to match colours to the words.
