Week 7 and 8

Literacy

In Literacy over the next two weeks we are revising the /yew/ sound box with the spelling choices ew;ue;eu;u-e and completing the South Australian Spelling Test. We complete the SAST in June and November. We will finish our learning of persuasive texts by looking at Greta Thunburg's United Nations speech and analyse the persuasive devices she used to convince her audience. We will then start a unit of work on Poetry to finish the year.

Students will also be completing online assessments and a hand written Cold Write.

Numeracy

This upcoming fortnight, we will continue to investigate a range of strategies to solve unknown values in maths equations involving addition and subtraction. Students will also define a simple class of problems and use an effective algorithm that involves a short sequence of steps and decisions to solve them. An effective algorithm is like a clear and simple set of instructions that help you easily solve a problem. The students will continue to develop their number fluency and explore these concepts with a range of concrete materials.

We have also been enjoying playing some Michael Minus Games and exploring multiplication. You may like to play these at home with your child and siblings.

Wellbeing

We are learning to look at problems from different perspectives and coping by asking ourselves a range of questions - is my problem as big as I think it is? Who can help me solve the problem? Who can support me when things gets tough? We will also revise our learning on Empathy and trying to understand the views and opinions of other people.

Science

We are exploring the concept of matter. How many states of matter are there? What are the differences between the three states of matter? And, most important of all, how is it that materials can be changed from one state of matter to another? We will engage in simple experiments using household items and take part in an exciting chemistry incursion presented by the spectacular science educator, Prof Bunsen Burner.
