Cricket Report

Week 3, Term 4 2023

A return to the school term brings with it a return to cricket for Summer season 2023/24. It has been a fantastic start to the season for all players, and I congratulate all for their effort with regard to training and weekend fixtures. Our program is in a strong position, with teams in Junior and Senior competitions enjoying their cricket, and reflecting depth in our club. I encourage our players to continue to train hard, to strive for growth and to use our wonderful coaches and facilities to the best of their ability.

It has been fantastic to see so many new and familiar faces around the grounds over the past fortnight. A Pink Stumps Event is being held on our Main Oval on Friday 3 November and I encourage the cricket community to come down and watch along, or get involved in the event. Please see the flyer in the general business of this edition of the Family Bulletin for more information. Saturday 4 November will be Kinross Wolaroi Cricket Club’s Pink Stumps Day – more information to come.

I look forward to seeing you around the grounds this week.

Will Waterson,

“You don’t show up on game day and expect to be great. Greatness happens in practice. You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.”

Touch Football Round 1

Division 1

Our first grade touch football girls had a cracking weekend away at Macquarie Uni this Saturday, kicking off the ISA season with a strong start. With the first game against Redlands resulting in a 4-4 draw, we welcomed Lucy Carney, Eden Hawker, Phoebe Smith, Lily Bruce, and Maggie Kirby into our team. We had a great start, with tries scored by Lily Bruce, Brooke Rayner and Katie Ivey. With low numbers in the subs Phoebe Smith and Lily Bruce pulled through and played the whole game in very hot conditions, holding up the team to get us over the line. Strong defence and hard drives set a high standard for the day, with our girls showing great persistence and effort in hot weather with limited numbers. Our second game against Barker saw two of our fantastic Inter A girls Eva Bonnington and Phoebe Hunter coming in for extra numbers. With fantastic talk from Amaya Shipp and Lucy Carney and some great defence from Maggie Kirby and Lily Bruce, our girls won this game 5-7. All the girls displayed a great positive attitude and have set a very high standard for the rest of the season. Another thank you to our extra players for helping us out for the day!!

Inter A

At noon, our team faced off against a formidable opponent in challenging conditions. Despite the intense heat and it being our first game together, we managed to rally under pressure, demonstrating remarkable teamwork. The outcome was a proud 5-3 victory for us! Two of our players stood out, Ava Healy and Eva Bonnington contributing notably to the score. Special recognition goes to two team members who were highlighted as 'players of the game'. A big thank you to our coach Claudia for her guidance and support throughout the game. Well done to everyone involved!

Junior A

Today, our team journeyed to Sydney to compete against Barker and Redlands. In our opening match against Barker, we faced a tough 4-2 defeat, but not without showcasing some remarkable talent. Zara Ward and Gracie Hosie delivered two exceptional tries, with Zara making a memorable full-field run to secure one. In the subsequent match against Redlands, we held our ground and concluded with a 4-4 draw. Tries were masterfully scored by Grace Hosie, Eve Napier, Minnie Whittle, and Freya Mason. It was a commendable start to our season with promising signs of growth and improvement. Well done, girls!

Junior B

KWS4 Bumblebees v Barker6

The Bumblebees met a strong Barker side to start the season on a hot day in Sydney, in their first game together. The team showed excellent improvement over the course of the game, working really hard for each other in both defence and attack. The first half saw Barker score 3 tries, but Ally Ward hit back for the Bumblebees early on the the second half, stepping multiple defenders to get to the line. Unfortunately, Claudia Staniforth went down with a knee injury after making some good attacking plays. A couple of late tries to Barker followed, with the score finishing 1-5 to Barker. Despite the result, it was a great effort from the Bumblebees in their first game.

KWS4 Bumblebees v St Spyridon2

The Bumblebees had to face the challenge of meeting SPY2 immediately after their Barker game in the heat of the afternoon. A lucky early try to SPY saw them go up before an outstanding intercept try to Greta Cunial put the Bees on the board. Great defensive efforts from the team, including Annie Bowman, Amelia Lawrie and Daisy McKay saw the Bees hold SPY to a 1-1 draw at half-time. The Bumblebees went on the attack early in the second half with Greta Cunial bagging her second try for the match in a great performance. Despite creating multiple chances out wide, with Maggie Hall and Alyssa Ferguson both coming close to scoring, handling errors started to creep in for the Bees. SPY managed to pick up two second half tries, as the heat and fatigue started to show for the Bees. The game finished 2-3, as an unfortunate loss for the Bees, with the scoreline not refacing their dominance for the majority of the game. But they showed their spirit and fight in difficult circumstances and should all be very proud of the start they have made to the season.

ISA Tennis report

Round 1 Saturday 21/10/23

Kinross Wolaroi was lucky enough to host the first round of the ISA competition in Orange last weekend. With the lovely weather, everyone was keen to step out onto court and begin the season. Kinross Wolaroi was up against the tough competition of Blue Mountains Grammar School (BMGS). We began the day with doubles games and we had a strong start, winning 5 out of the 6 matches. Anna Orr and Milli Mackay as well as Ashton Quinn-Woonton and Phoebe Paynter had very close doubles matches, winning both their games narrowly in tie breakers – well done to both teams.

The singles matches were highly competitive and many of these games decided the overall winner for the day. Well done to Charlie Hall, Anabelle van Wyk, Will Hoskins, Will Steventon, Anna Orr and Ashton Quinn-Woonton for winning their respective singles games. Overall, Kinross Wolaroi came away with the win against BMGS. A great start to the season and we are looking forward to playing in Bathurst next weekend.

Kinross Wolaroi Wins Prestigious Dudley Cup For The Second Consecutive Year

Thursday evening 19 October saw the Year 10 Debating Team put on a tremendous performance to defeat James Sheahan Catholic High School in the annual Dudley Cup debating competition held by the North Orange Rotary club.

Debaters Anabelle Van Wyk, Lucy McIsaac, Sala Orme-Smith and Bonnie McPhee negated the proposal ‘that school should start at a later hour in the day’. Whilst the affirmative, James Sheahan attempted to convince the audience that this proposal would be of benefit to the learning of adolescence, our team negated all arguments to show that little benefit would be gained, and there would be far too much disruption to all stakeholders and hence were declared the winners on the evening.

Dr Parry, who attended the evening was immensely proud of his students, noting their skilled approach as a team in presenting well-informed and logical arguments. The school was presented with the Dudley Cup trophy and a cheque to the value of five hundred dollars prize money for winning the competition.

Kinross Wolaroi Qualifies For The Finals Of The Australian National Virtual Debating Competition

Kinross Wolaroi debating teams have qualified to compete in the finals of the Australian National Virtual Debating competition. (ANVDC). Last Wednesday 18 October, the Year 7 B team and the Year 10 B team both competed in the quarter finals of the competition against Scot’s College Albury and PLC Sydney.

The Year 10B team, comprising Anabelle Van Wyke, Lucy McIsaac, Isabel Wong, and Bonnie McPhee debating PLC Sydney were able to convincingly negate the proposition that ‘there should be two houses of parliament, one for business and one for the people.’ After convincing the adjudicator of their arguments they were declared winners and have progressed to the Semi Finals of this National competition.

Unfortunately, the Year 7 team were not as fortunate. Poppy Warren, Anna Orr, Julia Barnett and Phoebe Wong, debated Scot’s College Albury affirming the proposal that ‘Australians should directly vote for the Prime Minister.’ Sadly, they were unable to convince the adjudicator, losing the debate, ending their debating journey for the year.
