Recent Events

During October, we came together to commemorate two exciting events - the 16th Founder's Day of Merlion School and Halloween. We also spotlight our students engagement in two activities that develop our core values and the school's Desired Student Learning Outcomes... 28uild Habitat for Humanity and the Internship Program.

Founder's Day - "Transitioning with Heart and Home"

In a heartwarming celebration, we honoured the theme of "Transitioning with Heart and Home: Merlion's School Journey to SIS Surabaya" during the Founder's Day event. This marked a significant milestone, celebrating 16 remarkable years of Merlion School's journey.

As we set sail on a new chapter transitioning to SIS Surabaya, we took a moment to reflect on our rich history and embrace the promise of a thrilling future in education. This event paid tribute to the 16 years of unwavering commitment to learning and growth, emphasising our path towards SIS Surabaya. Students and teachers had the opportunity to engage in various challenges, making the day even more memorable.

A delightful surprise was in store for us during the celebration, as Mum Ely treated us to the heartwarming gift of Nasi Tumpeng for lunch. The generosity and thoughtfulness of our school community shone brightly, and we're deeply grateful to Mum Ely for adding a delicious touch to our celebration. Every bite of the Nasi Tumpeng was savoured with delight.

Founder's Day served as a testament to the legacy we continue to uphold, symbolising our unwavering dedication to providing quality education for years to come. Here's to the past, the present, and the promising future that lies ahead!

Halloween - A Spooktacular Treat

Our Halloween celebration brought delight to our youngest learners from Preschool and Lower Primary. They embarked on a classic trick-or-treat adventure, going door to door, spreading giggles, and collecting sweet treats that illuminated their faces with joy. The excitement was truly contagious!

Meanwhile, our Upper Primary to Pre-University 2 students enjoyed thrilling games, all thanks to our fantastic Student Council. Laughter filled the corridors as they embraced the Halloween spirit. These events are more than just fun; they create magical memories and foster a sense of togetherness. Our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made these exciting days possible!

28uild Habitat for Humanity

On Saturday, October 28, 2023, the spirit of unity and commitment resonated as 28uild Habitat for Humanity embarked on a mission to transform the lives of villagers in four different locations across Indonesia—Gresik in East Java, Mauk in Tangerang, Yogyakarta, and Batam.

The initiative coincided with the commemoration of our 'Youth Pledge' or 'Sumpah Pemuda,' marking not only a dedication to one country, one nation, and one language but also a collective commitment to building a better Indonesia. This year marks a decade since the inception of the program, symbolizing a decade of progress and positive impact.

Nine enthusiastic pre-university students set out at the break of dawn, heading to Desa Kesambenkulon, Kec. Wringinanom, Gresik. Their mission: to contribute to the transformation of nine renovated houses and the construction of one new dwelling. The team, consisting of Christopher, Christabel, Victoire, Evelyn, Joeyline, Jason, Lucy, Livy, and Varryn from Pre-University 2, collaborated with students from other schools such as Surabaya Intercultural School and Cita Hati, alongside volunteers from various institutions.

The groups worked tirelessly, with Jason and Victoire earning the title of Volunteers of the Day for their exceptional dedication. They were integral parts of a collective effort that transcended school boundaries, demonstrating the power of collaboration in community service.

SIS Surabaya expresses its eagerness to participate in more Habitat for Humanity programs in the future, continuing to build not just houses but also hope and a brighter future for communities in need.

Internship

Internship Program is an annual program held by Merlion School Surabaya. It is part of an interdisciplinary project in Term 2. The goal of the program is to provide students with a gateway to real-world experiences, professional opportunities, and a chance to make a tangible impact on the student’s personal progress as well as on society.

The Internship program this academic year took place from 30th October to 3rd November 2023. SIS Surabaya (Merlion School Surabaya) has a total number of more than 30 company partners that accommodate all of the students of Secondary 1 until Pre-University 2. The company partners help the students dive into the world of business, technology, networking, and beyond.

Each level of students has their own unique field of work that they can focus on. For instance, Secondary 1 students really enjoy exploring the food industry and learning a lot about how food is produced until it reaches the customers’ hands. Meanwhile, Secondary 2 students immerse themselves in the creative industry where they learn a lot about advertising, designing, editing, and others to support the business they are interning in. On the other hand, Secondary students start to dwell in start-up and manufacturing areas where they can learn about how to start a new business and/or how to maintain existing ones.

Meanwhile, Secondary 4 until Pre-University students are expected to learn from the experts so that they can have more guided experience in deciding their future career that directly affects their decision in choosing the correct major in universities.

Overall, all students are expected to use the best of their abilities and skills during their internship, and, in return, they could also learn valuable lessons from the program to help them grow personally, academically, and professionally.
