Podcast Week 6 - Mia Scott "Principal for the day"

YEAR 1 GRADE SPOTLIGHT

The hive has been buzzing with excitement as we creep closer to the end of the year. The children are ecstatic to share the end of the presentation with you on Thursday 30th November. We hope you can make it to watch our performance.

If you have a son in Year 1, please remember to bring in your sunglasses. Girls, your teachers will help you with your accessories on the night.

Last Tuesday, Year One could NOT believe their eyes! As we walked into the classroom, there was caution tape around our classroom chairs… OUR CHAIRS HAD QUIT! Luckily, we had been working on writing persuasively in the learning space. So, we convinced the chairs to come back. Have a look at an example of our wonderful work.

In Mathematics we have been learning about Data. Last week each student was given a packet of Skittles, yummy! Before we could eat our skittles we had work to do…

We had to open our packet and sort them into the colours. There was lots of sniffing the skittles and trying hard to not eat them otherwise or data would change. Next we had to draw a table and use tally marks to represent the colour skittles in our packet. Year 1 showed great perseverance during this lesson and thoroughly enjoyed their skittles after the hard work had been completed!!

Tips for parents: The 21st century has brought about a huge emphasis on data. Our students must have a deep understanding of data to work effectively. In our daily lives we are called upon to understand information that is presented in graphs and tables.

Helping your child with data

We look forward to a fun-filled end of term for Year 1!

YEAR 4 GRADE SPOTLIGHT

PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

Presenting, performing and preparing. This was the fate of ten Stage 3 students who participated in finals of the Stage Three Public Speaking Competition held in the Auditorium on Thursday 9th November. The Year 5 competitors were Lucinda Crockett, Aggie Daly, Liam Gallagher, Zoe Sedon and Ruby McHugh.

The Year 6 competitors were Molly Stokeld, Lyla Davidson, Mia Scott, Rhani Spencer-Ruddy and Oliver Kunovic. The audience comprised of Year 4, 5 and 6 students who were treated to a plethora of differing content and topics, presented with finesse and enviable oration skills. Judging these students were Mrs Giovanna McDougall, Mrs Lynne Prisk, Mrs Kirrilee Ringland and Luke Suitor who brought many years of experience and knowledge to their difficult task.

Due to the high quality of the competition, the judges had to spend about 20 minutes to deliberate on the eventual winner and placegetters. Congratulations to Molly Stokeld who won the competition, with Lyla Davidson being the runner up and Mia Scott was highly commended. St Nicholas can be proud of the high standard of public speakers we are developing and nurturing!
