Reading

CURRICULUM FOCUS

During Reading this week, students are learning to infer a characters emotions, traits and motivations. Inferring involves using the texts clues such as what is written and the pictures that may be in the book, and inferring how the character is feeling, or why they may have done something.  Making inferences is a valuable skill for children to learn, as it will help them to pick apart texts and uncover meanings, themes and character motivations.

VOCABULARY

Inferences: a conclusion that you draw about something by using information that you already have about it.

Emotions: the feelings that a character may have, for example happy, angry, furious, excited, lonely, surprised, scared.

Traits: the personality of a character or person, for example generous, mean, friendly, serious.

Motivation: what drives a character to act the way that they do.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

While reading with your child, ask them to infer how the character is feeling on different pages. Encourage them to tell you what clues they have seen that help them know this.
