PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

‘Knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice.’
–Anton Chekhov
We who hold a passion for teaching share knowledge and skills for many reasons. The greatest among them, however, is witnessing our students use what they have learned. Whether they succeed or fail, the fact that they made an attempt is the important thing.
Our students demonstrate their grasp of concepts and techniques every day across all curriculum subjects. However, those studying units in the Technology Learning Area often produce tangible evidence of what they have learned, from delicious dishes to marvellous metalworks and artwork brought to life thanks to 3D printing.
The magic manufactured within our amazing Technology Learning Area takes centre stage in this year’s second issue of Community. Broadly speaking, anything humans create to satisfy a need is technology. By this definition, both the humble hammer and the hardware needed to travel into space have equal status.
At St Joseph’s College, students study both Applied Technology and Information Technology. Applied Technology subjects include Food Technology, Metal, Timber & Plastics, Mechanical & Electrical, and Textiles. Information Technology encompasses Applied Computing, Visual communication & Design, and Software Development.
I hope you enjoy seeing and reading about some of our ‘bright sparks’ and their fabulous creations. You are sure to be impressed.
This is also the final newsletter welcome that I will have the pleasure to write, since I retire at the end of Term 1.
As I bid farewell, I find myself reflecting on the wonderful journey we have shared over the past eight years. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones, each one a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence and inclusivity.
From the inception of innovative learning and teaching programs to the establishment of the Rainbow Alliance, our collective efforts have transformed our college into a beacon of diversity and academic prowess.
Undoubtedly, the years 2020 and 2021 presented unprecedented challenges, yet in the face of adversity, we rose resiliently. Through remote learning initiatives, community support endeavours, and meticulous strategic planning, we not only persevered but emerged stronger than ever before.
Our steadfast dedication to student wellbeing and the promotion of learning diversity has fostered an environment where every individual feels valued and empowered. Indeed, the remarkable increase in enrolments in 2024 stands as a testament to our continuous commitment to growth and progress within our beloved Mercy Community.
As I embark on the next chapter of my journey, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the St Joseph’s College community for your unwavering support, dedication, and the shared moments that have contributed to our collective legacy.
