Year 3 & 4

Around our level

Every Friday afternoon is a student adventure in year 3/4. This year we have integrated student choice electives into our Friday program. Our students have been choosing from three fantastic activities over the past 3 weeks: guided drawing, board and card games, or getting hands-on with the vegetable patch and frog bog.

Playing card games can offer various benefits for students beyond just entertainment. Here are some advantages:

  • Cognitive Skills: Card games often require strategic thinking, memory, and problem-solving. Regularly engaging in such games can enhance cognitive abilities, including memory retention, critical thinking, and logical reasoning.
  • Math Skills: Many card games involve mathematical calculations, such as counting points, probabilities, and strategic planning. This can help improve math skills in a fun and practical way.
  • Social Skills: Card games are typically social activities that involve interaction with others. Playing cards can help students develop social skills such as communication, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Stress Relief: Card games can serve as a stress-relieving activity, offering a break from academic pressures. Taking a short break to play cards can help students relax and refresh their minds.
  • Concentration and Focus: Playing card games requires concentration and focus, as players need to pay attention to the rules, their own cards, and the moves of others. This can contribute to improved attention spans and concentration levels.
  • Emotional Regulation: Card games often involve an element of chance, and players may experience both wins and losses.

Our students have been enjoying guided drawing. Beyond pencils and paper, guided drawing enhances creativity, fine motor skills, and focus. This artistic endeavor fosters self-expression, boosts confidence, and even improves hand-eye coordination.

Beyond green thumbs, the gardening program nurtures science skills, teamwork, and responsibility. Cultivating plants boosts fine motor skills, creativity, and fosters a love for nature.

We love our Friday program and cannot wait for lots of new and interesting student led choices.
