Performing Arts

Term 1 has been busy in Performing Arts! We have been exploring many aspects of drama including the elements of drama, acting skills, using the costumes and reading scripts.

The Foundation students have recently started working on the story of the 3 Little Pigs. We are practicing how to alter our voices in acting to portray the characters in different ways. Some of the students recognised that the wolf’s voice is lower and deeper than the pigs voices. This has been a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their creative skills in becoming the characters of this story.

In Grades 1 and 2 the students have been exploring different roles in drama. The students have explored the roles of Directors, Characters/Performers and the Costume Designer. The students created their own drama with a small group of peers. The director decided where the drama would take place, the characters decided how they were going to act and what movement and/or words would suit the drama and the costume designer decided what the characters would wear. The students reflected on their roles by writing something they enjoyed in their Performing Arts Profiles.

Grades 3 and 4 have been focussing on the elements of drama. Throughout these activities the students created their own drama with their peers. The students were able to dress up in the costumes and perform their dramas in front of the class. The students excelled in using their imaginary skills to create a drama, deciding what to wear, how to act and what to say throughout. It was exciting to see the students use their learnt acting skills throughout this activity.

Not only were the Grade 5 and 6 students reading scripts and practicing to act like a specific story, they were also asked to write their own short script with a group of peers and then act out their story. Each group created a short script around the stimulus of ‘High School’ and over a 2 week period explored writing a script, deciding what outfits to wear and then performing their scripts. Such great skills and techniques were demonstrated via the use of voice and movement in these performances.
