Grade 4

Reading

Recently in reading, students have been exploring another mentor text, 'The Treasure Box' by Margaret Wild and Freya Blackwood.

So far, students have predicted the events of the story, researched the vocabulary in the book, identified time connectives, and began developing a story map. Students have been deeply engaged in the story elements and illustrations.

Next week, we will begin to look closer at why the author has portrayed different elements of the story in certain ways through colour, salience, and angles.

Writing

We have continued to explore the exciting world of writing narratives.  We have taken a closer look at the elements that make up a great story - including a sizzling start, multiple events to build suspense and how to finish off our stories with a satisfying ending.

Stay tuned for some of our great narratives!

Maths

The grade 4s have been finishing off their work in addition. We have been investigating and expanding our knowledge of different mental strategies to help us solve problems more easily. These have included utilising a number line to use the jump strategy, partitioning numbers in place value columns, changing numbers to get to easier to add numbers such as 10s, and vertical addition with and without regrouping.

Integrated

This week the year fours have been looking at Pangea. They have learnt that Pangea means all land in Greek, and that the way we see Earth today, is not the way it was originally. They have had fun leaning the concept and are looking at it for one more week.

Respectful Relationships

The year 4 cohort have been looking at fears. They have discussed what the term means, what fears are and that we all have different fears to each other. They have learned ways they can cope with the different fears they have, and to help a friend when they are feeling scared.
