Grade 1

Literacy

Students have begun to complete different ‘Can do activities’ as part of their Literacy block. This involves hands-on group activities  such as puzzles and games of snap to help reinforce what they have been learning in the actual lessons. Students have demonstrated their increasing independence in looking after their learning by selecting a wide range of activities from their can do baskets.

Students have enjoyed learning about what nouns are and identifying them in their learning environment. As part of our Literacy lesson we have been combining singing to help us identify nouns! Our favourite was including all the different places we visit such as Kmart, Big W, Coles and Swimming in our songs!

In Writing, students participated in a retelling of the story ‘Sam and Dave Dig A Hole’. They focused on the setting, problem and solution in the story and being able to write them into Super Sentences! Students were able to copy sentences from the board for the setting and problem before writing their own solution to the end of the story.

Maths

Year 1 students have continued to build upon their place value knowledge up to two digits.  They have engaged in an abundance of hands-on activities representing numbers in different ways and counting collections of manipulatives.  To further student understanding,  they have been taught to count and arrange numbers into groups of tens and ones.  To reinforce place value concepts, students have been using resources such as number charts, number lines and place value charts. Happy counting and remember our tens and ones places!

Respectful Relationships/Library/Integrated

In the past fortnight, the Grade 1’s have been learning about the diversity of family structures and the role of family groups. Students explored how family roles differ around the world as well as the various connections that are between them. This crucial aspect of social and emotional learning fosters empathy, understanding and inclusivity whilst allowing the facilitation of open conversations.

The Grade 1 students have also engaged in activities and discussions about particular emotions and their triggers. The students were able to use their own experiences to explain these different emotions and wrote short sentences about them!
