InitaLit - Reading

In Initial Lit, our Preps have begun to learn letter sounds m, s and t. Students have learnt the sound that each letter represents and its letter name. To help students remember these letters and sounds we were introduced to some new friends Maggie Mouse, Sammy Seal and Tommy Tiger! They’ve loved learning the sounds and being able to identify them in spoken words and pictures.

In our StoryBook sessions, we've explored the books ‘Bogtrotter’ and ‘A Nice Walk in the Jungle’. Through these stories, we've discussed the beginnings, middles, and ends. We've made connections beyond the texts and explored the meaning of vocabulary like gloomy, hopeful, stared, lumpy, dare and tender.

We're incredibly proud of the progress the Preps are making and we're excited to continue building on their letter and sound knowledge in the coming weeks.

Integrated:

Over the past fortnight, we've explored the "Blue Zone" and the emotions within it. Specifically, we focused on the body language cues that accompany feelings of sadness, tiredness and fear. Students looked for sad expressions like lowered bottom lips, drooping eyes, tears, and slanting eyebrows,  through characters in the story "Chrysanthemum". They then applied this understanding by drawing faces reflecting sadness, fear and tiredness.

In our Writing session, we continued to practise correctly forming our names. Preps practised starting their names with a capital letter, followed by a sequence of lowercase letters. They traced their names and then copied them on the dotted third lines underneath independently. Additionally, we explored the formation of uppercase and lowercase "Tt". Through hands-on materials such as rice, sand, playdough, chalk, and whiteboards, students engaged in letter formation exercises.

In our Respectful Relationships class, the exploration of emotions remained a key focus. Students further deepened their understanding of body language cues linked to various emotions. This was achieved through observing different emotions using mirrors with a partner.

Maths

This fortnight, the Prep students have continued learning all about numbers 1-10 and how these can be represented in different ways; numerals, collections of objects, tens frames and many more! We have loved seeing the students continue to immerse themselves in lots of fun hands-on activities that promote their understanding of each number and its value. The Prep students have particularly enjoyed representing numbers in tens frames by touch-counting different objects and placing them inside the tens frames.
