Stem

Grayling students are in full swing here in the STEM classrooms!

Our Preps have commenced their time in STEM, learning about the rules of the classroom and expanding their knowledge of ‘movement’. The students have learnt about voluntary and involuntary movements within our bodies and are now focused on toys that move. They have explored cars rolling, yo-yos and fidget spinners spinning, jewellery boxes dancing and balls bouncing. The Preps are currently very excited to explore movement using our Beebots.

Our Grade 1 & 2’s have been learning about light and sound. They investigated different items that produce light and  put their knowledge of sounds to the test, by guessing mystery sounds. The Grade 1’s & 2’s discovered that sound travels through vibrations by creating their very own string telephone.

Our Grade 3’s & 4’s have commenced their big project for the term creating ‘Arcade Games’ in collaborative groups. The students have worked in groups to design an Arcade game that uses their knowledge of different forces; magnetic, gravity, push, pull, friction. We have some fantastic plans for air hockey tables, claw machines and ball drop machines, just to name a few!  For the rest of the term, the students will create and revise their projects to ensure wonderful games are in place for our STEAM show later in the year.

Our Grade 5’s & 6’s have also begun their main project for the term creating a display using electrical circuits for our STEAM show. These displays may contain either a light bulb, motor, or buzzer. Some of the ideas we are seeing include light projectors, wind turbine models and car racing tracks to name a few. We are excited for the next few weeks as the students continue to refine their ideas and build on their knowledge of electrical circuits.

If you have a child in Grade 3, 4, 5, or 6 please remind them and encourage them to bring in recycled materials for their STEAM show projects!
