Secondary Community News

Lower Secondary (Years 7-8)

During Week 3, students in lower secondary participated in an activity where they demonstrated their prior knowledge of Australian and Aboriginal history. They also shared what they hope to learn from this term's inquiry topic - Me and Our History

In Week 4, students continued to explore the topic by taking part in an incursion focused on Aboriginal culture and tradition. The students engaged in various activities related to the Aboriginal culture during this session. In addition, the students enjoyed writing about themselves in Writing lessons and learning about reading and writing numbers up to 1000 in Maths.

Upper Secondary (Years 9-10)

The Year 9/10 programme is coming together as students and teachers get to know each other – and also all the parents who attended our SSG evening – it was great to meet you all.

Learning, both in and out of the classroom has started with the year 9 students learning new skills in the kitchen. This week they demonstrated their use of knives to chop and make a fresh fruit salad – healthy and great for the hot days and soon they will be focusing on healthy lunches.

In the last newsletter, we said ‘Watch this space’ for Café news! And the news is…. the business now has a name and a cool logo! Our creative students have been thinking, researching and designing in their teams and have come up with the name Hungry Flame. They have also been creating a delicious menu for staff to choose from for their weekly, Café dine-in or takeaway lunch experience – a practice run will be happening in the next few weeks ready for the launch next term.

Some students have already been demonstrating their Planning and Organising skills for their excursions to Watergardens last week, where they focused on the variety of shops and Cafes for ideas on running a small business. This week students will be focusing on our local community by walking around the school area taking note of safe road crossings, hospitals, station and local businesses’.

Senior Secondary (VPC/ASDAN)

What a good start to term one. All students have settled back into the routine and lots of learning and fun has begun.

On Mondays class 10-12B have been, as part of community access, visiting Sunshine Library; students’ have enjoyed choosing books to read and playing games on the library’s computers.

On Fridays ASDAN 10-12 A have enjoyed travel training to Highpoint on the public bus. As part of developing independence and confidence students help plan the journey and look after their own MYKI and money that some students use to buy lunch and shop. On Thursdays they have been working hard at Sunshine Hospital looking after courtyard gardens as part of ASDAN’s Work Experience program.
