Clean Up Australia Day

Clean Up Australia Day

At Fairfield PS, we decided to do a whole week of cleaning up our school grounds for Clean Up Australia Day this year! The students were very enthusiastic and the grounds look wonderful.

Clean Up Australia Day was started by Ian Kiernan in 1990. Over the past 33 years, over 21 million Australians have donated their time (equivalent to 38.5 million hours!) to Clean Up Australia activities. As Australia’s waste challenges continue to grow, we all need to look towards and support solutions that move us towards a circular economy – where everything is a resource, and there is no such thing as waste.

Often children can get to the heart of matters, so we asked some Year 3 students to share their thoughts about litter and the environment.

I feel happy when I see the Earth clean and happy. ~ Athena

I feel happy and calm when the earth is clean because the earth is a beautiful place without rubbish. ~ Mia

I think it good to take care of the earth and everyone seems happier when it’s clean. ~ Iliana

You must pick up rubbish so that animals don’t die. ~ Winter

Imagine if you’re just a tree with a simple life and you got chopped down for wood! Use more scrap paper for recycling and make sure we have lots of fresh air. ~ Miranda

These Year 3 students often spend part of their lunch and recess with a bucket and tongs doing their best to take care of the school.

Eco Club

Today was our first student Eco Club meeting. Eco Club is for students in Years 4 – 6. It is held on Thursdays at lunchtime (the first half). Anyone from Years 4 – 6 is welcome to join. This week we discussed worm farms and lost property. We have some big plans, and the students had some brilliant ideas so stay tuned!
