Year Three

Year Three's Excursion to Niddrie Library and Local Community Walk!

As part of our unit of inquiry students have been exploring the central idea, 'Communities respond to local needs' through the Transdisciplinary Theme 'How we organise ourselves'.

As we continue to make connections our Year Three students recently embarked on an adventure and exploration of our local community.

The highlight of this learning experience was our visit to the Niddrie Library. Our students were greeted by amazing Suzanne, the Librarian, who discussed the variety of free services that the library offers to all age groups and promoted the wide selection of books of different genres and topics from the many shelves waiting to be explored. The visit began with an enchanting storytelling session that captured the imaginations of our students.

In addition to our library visit, our Year Three students engaged in a local community walk. This endeavour allowed them to connect classroom learning with the real world. We strolled through our neighbourhood, observing and appreciating the various features, shops, services, landscapes, and buildings that make our community unique.

During the walk, the classroom teachers provoked conversations with students by highlighting the different local shops and businesses and understanding the roles each establishment plays in our local community. This hands-on experience enhanced students' understanding of the interconnectedness of our local environment and all the services provided to cater to everyone’s needs.

We were impressed by how principled, respectful, and responsible all the students were for their first excursion.
