School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

Working Together for Positive Behaviour
One of the greatest strengths of School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is that it’s most effective when schools and families are working in partnership. When children hear the same clear and consistent messages at home and at school, it helps them understand expectations and build positive habits.
Here are some ways you can support SWPBS at home:
- Use the same language: Reinforce our expectations of Be Kind, Be Safe, Be a Learner in your home routines. For example, talk about being safe when crossing the road, being kind when playing with siblings, or being a learner when tackling homework.
- Notice the positives: Children thrive on encouragement. Just like at school, try to recognise and acknowledge positive behaviour straight away. A smile, a thumbs up, or a short comment like, “I noticed how kind you were helping your brother” makes a big impact.
- Talk about challenges: If your child talks about a tricky situation at school, use it as an opportunity to problem-solve together. Ask, “What could you do next time to show ‘Be Kind, Be Safe, or Be a Learner’?” This helps children see challenges as learning opportunities.
- Celebrate effort and persistence: Remind children that mistakes are part of learning. Acknowledge their effort to “keep trying,” as persistence is a powerful part of Being a Learner.
Model positive behaviour: Children learn a lot by watching adults. Show them what it looks like to stay calm, use kind words, and make safe choices in everyday situations.
When families and schools send the same consistent messages, children feel supported and secure. Together, we are showing them that positive behaviour matters, is noticed, and is worth celebrating.
Have a great week!
