🌱 LITERACY – Reading

We are finishing our class novel Mac Slater Cool Hunter by Tristan Bancks. This week, students will be wrapping up the story by reading the final chapters and completing a creative book reflection. As part of this, they will design a brand-new cover for the novel that captures the themes, characters and energy of the text. To conclude, students will also write a letter to Tristan Bancks himself, sharing their thoughts, favourite moments, and reflections on the story.

What you can do at home:

Encourage your child to talk about the book with you. Ask them what they enjoyed most about Mac Slater Cool Hunter and what they might have done differently if they were the main character. You could also look at the cover they design and ask them to explain their choices. Discussing stories in this way helps strengthen comprehension, critical thinking and confidence in sharing ideas.

🌱 Writing

Students are completing the final stage of Tristan Bancks’ Story School program. Story School is a series of writing workshops created by Tristan that guide students through the process of developing their own creative stories. From generating ideas and planning, to drafting, revising and polishing their work. Throughout the program, students have developed an appreciation for how authors constantly redraft and refine their stories to make them the best they can be. This week, students will be publishing their short stories and sharing them with their classmates. It has been a wonderful opportunity for students to explore their creativity, practise important writing skills, and experience what it’s like to think and write like a real author.

What you can do at home

Encourage your child to share their short story with you once it’s published. Ask them about the choices they made about the setting, characters or ending, and what changes they made along the way as they redrafted. Celebrating the effort behind their writing, not just the final piece, helps them see themselves as real authors and builds pride in their creativity.

🌱 NUMERACY

This week in 'Maths on the Move', our Grade 5 students are continuing to strengthen their understanding of measurement, focusing on converting between different units and building confidence in applying these skills.

Grade 6 students are extending their learning of measurement by exploring equivalent units of measurement in length, mass and volume, and using their knowledge to tackle a range of problem-solving questions. Both year levels are developing important skills that support their mathematical thinking and real-world application.

By the end of the week, we will wrap up our work on length, mass and volume and move onto 'time' as our next area of learning.

What you can do at home

Parents can support this learning at home by involving children in real-life measurement tasks such as cooking, shopping, or gardening. Encouraging them to measure and convert units, compare quantities, or solve small challenges helps build confidence and strengthens their problem-solving skills in meaningful contexts.

🌱 CBL

This week, students are combining their research and design skills to create informative plant identification tags for the plants around our school. Each tag will include the plant’s name, key features, and interesting facts to help our school community learn more about the natural environment. This project encourages students to take pride in their surroundings, share knowledge with others, and contribute to making our school grounds both educational and welcoming.

Essential Question:

How do we leave a lasting legacy?

Guiding Questions:

- In what ways has our area changed over time?

- How do rules and regulations help to protect our environment?

- How are the environmental changes in places tracked and managed over time?

- What can we do as a community to ensure the ongoing sustainability of Wonga Park?

Challenge:

Regenerate an area of our school to make a lasting change.

🌱 HOMEWORK

Students are expected to complete homework on a weekly basis. This consists of

- 100 minutes total of reading a novel/factual text of their choice

- 3 (minimum) Mathletics tasks, which the teachers will assign

- 2 Nessy activities

This homework is to be recorded in the Calendar App on student iPads. Your child's teacher will check this homework on Friday.

BUDDY BAGS - Grade 5 students have been introduced to Buddy Bags, which are gifted to their 2026 Prep Buddies. The first and second tasks have been submitted and now students, over the next two weeks are making their buddies an alphabet book. Please check in with your child to ensure they are on task for bringing their item in by the due date.

MEMORY BOOKS - Grade 6 students have been introduced to the Memory Book they will create in Terms 3 and 4, to reflect on their experiences at Wonga Park Primary School. This information will be communicated to parents via email, and is available for students on Showbie.
