Italian Newsletter– Term 3

This term, our Foundation students enthusiastically explored Italian numbers from 1–10. Their learning was enriched with colourful storybooks, playful games, and interactive activities. Through the Unit of Inquiry concept of connection, students began to see how language links with stories and their everyday world.

The Junior years connected their Unit of Inquiry Casa Dolce Casa (Home Sweet Home) with the Italian language, exploring the concepts of form and connection. Together we discussed what makes a house a home, linking family members and rooms in Italian. Students created origami houses labelled in Italian and added family members, before beginning to write simple sentences such as Il papà è nella cucina. Games like charades and role plays made the language come alive, while deepening their understanding of homes, needs, and environments.

Middle students immersed themselves in the world of Il Carnevale di Venezia, connecting to their Unit of Inquiry on how we express ourselves. Through the concepts of form and perspective, they revisited colour vocabulary, learnt clothing terms, and explored Italian culture through mask-making and role plays. Their unit will culminate in a fashion show, where students will present their creative masks, describe outfits in Italian.

Our Senior students explored the Unit of Inquiry Dove Siamo Nel Luogo e Nel Tempo (Where We Are in Place and Time) through the lens of Italian history. Investigating eras such as Ancient Rome, the Renaissance, and the Medieval period, they examined how people’s lives, food, clothing, and jobs changed over time. Linking to the PYP concepts of change, connection, and perspective, and developing Approaches to Learning in research, communication, and self-management, students designed a “Time Travel Brochure” showcasing their findings. Using Italian vocabulary for food, clothing, jobs, landmarks, and famous people, they combined creativity with cultural understanding while reflecting on their learning process.
