Foundation/Grade 1

Religion

In our RE unit, Celebrating Creation, students were exposed to an appreciation and wonder at God’s presences in creation. In this task students explored different seeds and how they look different and grow into different plants, trees or produce. We looked at the life cycle of a seed and students created a mobile with three different stages of the life cycle.

Grade 2

With just one week to go, the Grade 2 class has been busy preparing their Puppet Show as a culmination of their Inquiry learning. Along the way, they have investigated sound by experimenting with instruments they created, as well as others they watched and listened to online. In English, they explored different storylines through readers’ theatre and practiced reading aloud in small groups. The Grade 3/4 LS class kindly supported us by teaching how to create and record sound effects using the GarageBand app. To finish the term, Grade 2 will present their Puppet Show to the 3/4 LS class as a way of saying thank you.

This term students have enjoyed learning about famous artists. We have explored Keith Haring, Henri Rosseau and Yayoi Kusama. Our recent artworks were inspired by Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese artist who used lots of bright colours with interesting patterns. She especially liked dots. Yayoi liked to draw magical mushrooms – just like something from a forest or storybook. Students drew their own magical mushroom and created artworks that “popped” with colour and dot patterns.

We can’t wait to see who our next artist is!

Grade 3/4

Literacy – Charlotte’s Web

In writing we have started reading Charlotte’s Web. Within the unit, students will plan and write a narrative.

Inquiry – balloon cars

As part of our ‘Functions and Forces’ inquiry unit, students have been exploring how different forces—like push, pull, friction, and air resistance affect movement. Over the last few weeks, they put their learning into action with an exciting hands-on challenge: designing and building a balloon-powered car.

Visual Art – Keith Haring pieces

Recently, students completed artworks that were Keith Haring inspired! Students completed a 'pop art' piece that incorporated pattern, line and colour. Students used a mixture of watercolour and crayons to make their pieces come to life. They experimented with contour lines and movement lines.

Grade 5/6

What a busy and exciting week it has been in Grade 5/6!

In Literacy, we have been diving into our novel The Greatest Bookshop in the World and exploring the genres of realistic fiction and magical realism. We’ve also been sharpening our writing skills by experimenting with narrative features such as similes, metaphors, and personification, all in preparation for our own creative stories with the theme A Touch of Magic

In Inquiry, our classrooms have been buzzing with creativity as students code and design their very own presentations on the wonders of science using Octo Studio.

In Religion, we’ve been learning about the seven days of Creation and how this story helps us understand the world and our relationship with God.

Thursday was also RU OK? Day, where students reflected on things they can and can’t control and what are important qualities in being a great friend.

To finish off our week, some of our students represented St Joseph’s in a friendly game of football against Rochester Primary School - a wonderful opportunity for teamwork and sportsmanship. Well done to all our Grade 5/6 students for their enthusiasm, effort, and positivity throughout another fantastic week of learning!
