Junior's Excursion

Inquiry Excursion – Exploring Our Island
As part of our Inquiry unit focusing on geography—exploring the places in which we live, why they are important to us, their features, and how they can be cared for—our Grade 1/2 students have been learning all about our island and its special places.
On Friday, 5th September, we went on an excursion around Phillip Island to see some of these important places firsthand.
Our first stop was Berneni,t where we enjoyed a fascinating tour of the venue, including the Historical Society exhibition. We kept our eyes peeled for artefacts from the Speke shipwreck, which ran aground on Phillip Island on 22nd February 1906. One highlight was learning about the Speke’s figurehead, which was thought to bring good luck. After the wreck, it went missing for decades before being discovered in a garage! We also saw the compass box and other treasures linked to this historic event.
From there, we travelled to Churchill Island, where we saw the farm animals, watched a working dog show, and even had the chance to pat the baby animals. We explored the old homesteads and enjoyed our lunch in the beautiful surroundings. The weather was perfect, making the experience even more special.
Afterwards, we continued our adventure to The Nobbies, taking in the breathtaking views along the coastal road.
We were very lucky to have Mrs. OC as our tour guide for the day. She planned a wonderful excursion and filled us with so much local knowledge about our island and its unique features.
It was truly a day to remember—full of learning, exploring, and appreciating the special places that make Phillip Island our home.
