What's Happening at CHPS

PE News
Well done everyone on another fantastic, jam packed term of Sport and PE. It has been wonderful to see the development across the term with our Athletics unit, European Handball for the year 3-6 classes and Volleyball for the Prep-2 classes. We have had a number of students progress through to next levels of competition in various sports, representing CHPS. As PE teachers, it has been wonderful to see the effort and dedication to their training each week, which has resulted in individual and team success. As we head into a well deserved break over the holidays, we do have some reminders and considerations for next term.
Senior Girls State Netball Finals
On Wednesday, our girls' netball team competed in the State Finals. As they have at every single stage, the girls showed incredible teamwork, determination, and played the game in the right spirit. This was rewarded on the day as the girls received the Spirit of Sport Award for their incredible sportsmanship. Not only did our girls play the game fairly, but they also showed off their skills, making it to the state final and finishing as runner-up. To finish second in the entire state is an incredible achievement, and everyone at CHPS couldn't be prouder. Well done Isabelle M, Sophie K, Ariella C-S, Ava J, Layla, K, Alannah S, Daisy W, Ana W-M, Lana W and Zoe W. A huge shout out to Peta Fay, who coached the girls throughout the entire process, Kali Fraser for training the girls at school and Sian Jamison who was the unofficial team manager.
Hats and Water bottles:
Term 4 brings us back to wearing hats with the changes in weather and being sun smart. We have noticed quite a few students not bringing their water bottles to their PE lessons this term. It is students responsibility to bring appropriate items to their specialist classes and hydration plays an important roll in maintaining your bodies energy and recovery so we would highly encourage students to get into good habits with bringing their water bottle to PE lessons.
Injuries and Illnesses:
We would just like to remind families that if your child is unwell or has injured themselves and are not able to participate in their PE lesson that week, can parents please email their PE teacher so we can keep a record of this. We would also like to help guide students with what activities they can still participate in. If we don’t receive an email, we will presume students are fit to participate.
Prep-2 House Cross Country:
The Prep – 2 House Cross Country is coming up early in Term 4 (Wednesday 29th October, Week 4). It has been wonderful to see so many students attending Running Club to help increase their fitness and prepare themselves for the distance. In order for this event to run smoothly, we require the help of volunteers to assist with course checkpoints, handing out finishing tags, lining students up etc. If you are able to assist for the morning, please email laura.yorke@education.vic.gov.au
Time: 9:15-11:30am
Dress Code: Students wear their house colours and appropriate footwear
Schedule:
Age Group | Distance | Race time approx |
Year 2 boys | 1500m | 9:25am |
Year 2 girls | 1500m | 9:40am |
Year 1 boys | 1500m | 9:55am |
Year 1 girls | 1500m | 10:10am |
Prep boys | 1000m | 10:25am |
Prep girls | 1000m | 10:40am |
Please note: This is a guide as we are always unsure how long it will take for the last runner to finish the previous race.
A compass event will be posted early next term for families to consent to.
Year 3 Bike Ed:
An exciting program begins next term for the year 3’s, which is Bike Ed. A compass event has be sent out to families with further information but can we please ask parents to check your child’s bike and helmet to make sure it is safe to wear and ride. We do have a set of school bikes and helmets to assist with those who may not have a bike. Can you please notify your classroom teacher if your child will require the use of a school bike and/or helmet. If your child doesn’t regularly ride, can we encourage students to start practicing over the holidays so they can begin to feel comfortable leading into week 2 of term 4.
Happy holidays everyone 😊

Maroondah Council Recycled Art Project
Year 5 students have been working super hard this term to create a number of sculptural creatures from recycled materials.
Students took part in a free incursion, organised by the Maroondah Council, with installation artist Carolyn Cardinet. Carolyn presented our students with a discussion about plastics, plastic pollution and how we can be proactive in response to plastics in particular in our waterway. Students were surprised at the time need to break down certain plastic products e.g. it takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to decompose
After the presentation students worked with Carolyn to develop skills and ideas that would then catapult into the terms work.
Every week students meet up with myself and Steve Crook, our science and eco teacher, to create and develop unique sculptural characters using a variety of recycled plastics.
What is most exciting is that students' artworks will be on display as part of the Marhoondah Council Peak Plastique event, alongside Carolyn Cardinet’s artwork at ArtSpace at Realm, located at 179 Maroondah Highway, Ringwood (Ringwood library at Eastland).
There will be an Opening Event, which our students have been invited to attend, on Thursday 9 October, 6-7.30pm.
Below is the Mahoondah Council link to the event, exhibition and a number of activities for the community to get involved.
Terrific work girls - such amazing and creative creations developed from recycled plastic items.
Looking forward to seeing them on display at Realm ArtSpace.
