Year 11 Food Studies – Term 3

In Term 3, our Year 11 Food Studies students explored the fascinating world of food production and development. Their studies began with a focus on food safety, examining the Food Safety Act and the legal requirements that must be met before a new food product can be released to market. This gave students an understanding of the strict standards that underpin both commercial and retail food industries.

From there, the class moved into “The Science of Food,” where theory was brought to life through practical investigation. Students conducted a series of experiments, including pH testing of common liquids to understand acidity and alkalinity in food preparation. These experiments deepened their knowledge of how scientific principles influence taste, texture, and food safety.

The term concluded with an exploration of the various methods of cooking food. Students investigated which foods are best suited to different cooking techniques, broadening their appreciation of how method impacts flavour, nutrition, and overall food quality.

This combination of legal knowledge, scientific exploration, and hands-on practice provided students with a rich and well-rounded understanding of the complexities involved in food production and preparation.
