Junior School

Stephen Nelson, Head of Junior School

End of Term message

As we come to the end of another busy and productive term at Myrniong, I would like to take a moment to thank everyone in our learning community for their ongoing support and involvement in all that we do. This term has been filled with growth, learning, and many memorable moments—from classroom achievements and creative projects to excursions, camps, sporting events and special activities. It has been wonderful to see our students continuing to thrive both academically and socially.

As we head into the spring school holidays, I encourage everyone to enjoy a well-earned break. Whether you’re spending time at home, travelling, or simply enjoying the warmer weather outdoors, I hope it’s a time of rest, fun, and family. We look forward to welcoming students back refreshed and ready for the final term of the year on Monday, 6 October.

Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Star Student Awards

The following students received Star Students Awards at this week’s Assembly:

Piccino

  • Mihiraan Sehgal for showing wonderful growth in using his voice more each day. We are so proud of the way he is developing his confidence, sharing his ideas, and letting his personality shine.

  • Jason Sparks for his perseverance and determination when faced with challenges. Jason has shown remarkable growth in his willingness to try new things, even when they are difficult, demonstrating resilience, courage, and a positive approach to learning.

  • Annabelle Barber for her incredible skill and confidence on the monkey bars. Annabelle has amazed us with her ability to go backwards, skip bars, and demonstrate exceptional control and courage.

Prep

  • Bear Hoffmann for consistent improvement in classroom learning manners resulting in consistent improvement in reading, writing, spelling and counting. Keep up the great focus Bear!

Year 5

  • Thomas Kennedy for his thorough research and well-presented, fact-filled speaking assessment on the Coati.

  • Milla McCure for being prepared and speaking with confidence and expression when, at the last minute, she had to read a long poem on her own for the Learmonth House Service.

  • Sammie Price for working particularly hard to complete an interesting presentation on the Stone Fish, but also for her consistent effort in Mathematics where she is curious and eager to learn and consequently is seeing great success.

Year 3 and 4 Camp

I had the pleasure of attending the Year 3 and Year 4 camp at a new venue for our school, Cave Hill Creek Camp in Raglan. The students enjoyed activities such as hut building, archery, canoeing, bush cooking, orienteering, and low ropes. The venue is in a beautiful part of Victoria. For the majority of the camp, we enjoyed some lovely spring weather.

Many thanks to Ms Winstanley and Mrs Alexander for the generous care and support they extended to our students. The Year 3 and Year 4 students were amazing ambassadors for the College and were a rewarding group to spend time with outdoors.

Sports Grand Finals

Basketball

Congratulations to the Under 12B Boys who won their HBA Winter Season Grand Final last Friday night, defeating Minders Jazz 27-10. The Under 12B Sooty Owls had a great season, but Tigers Yellow were too strong in their Grand Final.

Hockey

Under-13 Eagles went down to Coleraine Gold in a penalty shootout, after scores were 3-3 at the end of regular time.

Hockey 7's success

Our Boys’ and Girls’ Hockey 7s teams headed for Melbourne last Thursday to participate in the School Sport Victoria Hockey 7s Finals at Footscray. They were representing the Greater Western Region of Victoria.

Our Girls’ team played some great hockey against teams from very large schools, predominantly comprising Year 6 students. They lost their first match narrowly to the eventual winner, Spring Creek Primary School, and lost a close match to Cathedral College, Wangaratta. In their final match, the Girls had a strong 5-0 win over Ashley Park Primary School. They finished third in their pool.

The Boys' team won all their pool matches against Strathfieldsaye Primary School, Mernda Park Primary School and St Anne’s College Kialla. They progressed to the Grand Final, where they defeated Albert Park Primary School 4-1. In a lovely coincidence, 2019 was the last time we were State Hockey 7s champions. The Boys and Girls’ team from 2019 are our current Year 12s. Many were in the premiership-winning Division 1 Women’s and Division 1 Men’s teams that won in Grand Finals on Friday night at Pedrina Park.

Thank you to coaches Tim and Abbie Cameron, managers Bec Small and Jo Bell, and to the amazing College parents who supported the teams in Melbourne.
