Year 9 Maths Assessment

Get ready for an amazing look at maths! Our Year 9 Advanced Mathematics students in Mrs Rainbird and Mrs Cosier’s class have been unleashing their creativity with a super fun Face Art in DESMOS project. This isn't your typical maths class—it's where geometry meets art!
Students started by mastering the basics of lines and parabolas, learning how simple changes to an equation can make a line translate and a curve reflect. Then, they dove into the exciting world of animation and mathematical functions to create stunning digital portraits. They explored different functions like circles, ellipses, sines, and cosines to add incredible details to their characters, from hats and hairstyles to eyepatches and shirts.
This wasn't just about drawing; it was about critical thinking and problem-solving. Students had to use their new maths knowledge to get the exact look they wanted. They even used vibrant colours to bring their creations to life, adding unique backgrounds to make their art truly pop.
This engaging project has shown our students how powerful and creative maths can be. It's not just for textbooks—it's the magic behind the animated characters and special effects we see every day. This unit on mathematical transformations has not only been a blast but has also helped them appreciate where a passion for maths might take them in the future!
Some of our students achieved fantastic results on their projects! We're thrilled to share their impressive work with you below. This is a great example of how a strong foundation in maths can lead to exciting future opportunities, in animation and beyond!
