Year 2 Mainstream

Celebrating Learning

What we have been up to:

As Term One wrapped up, Year 1/2 classes finished off our integrated focus ‘Living Local – Finding our Hearts’. Children added the final touches to their class murals and writing up a storm on all things Thornbury! Our integrated learning never really stops,  as last terms topic leads us nicely into this term's topic, ‘Living Things – Care for Country.’

Maths:

Children have been working on developing an understanding of place value through exploration and game play. Place value is an integral  building block for further mathematical skills and concepts. We have been learning to determine the value of a numeral depending on its position in a number. For example, we now know that in 34 we have 3 tens and 4 ones, in 210 we have 2 hundreds, 1 ten and 0 ones, and beyond. Students have been focusing on reading time on an analogue clock to the hour half hour,  and quarter past and quarter to. Continue to discuss this with your child at home, as it’s a complex skill that requires a lot of practice.

Literacy:

Students have continued to develop their knowledge in phonics as they have explored consonant digraphs, trigraphs and long vowel sounds. In writing, we have looked at planning and drafting narratives, recounts and information reports about locations in our community. Students have selected one draft to publish this term.

What’s to come this term:

Students will begin to look at efficient mental strategies for addition and subtraction. We will also look at data collection and representation that will link to our integrated topic ‘Living things - Care for Country’. It will also be a busy term with many upcoming events, including our CERES excursion on Wednesday 14th May - SAVE THE DATE! Please see Compass post for more details. If you are interested in volunteering on the day, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Reading  groups continue to review and learn about stage 6 digraphs and trigraphs, as well as stage 7 long vowel sounds. We will also explore information reports in writing.

To reinforce their learning, students could be practising reading at home with their take home readers. Students who are reading other books should also be encouraged to record this reading in their reading diary.
