Visual Arts

Welcome back to Term 2! Last week in Visual Arts, all students explored the significance of ANZAC Day and what it represents. As part of our commemoration, each student created a poppy to be placed in the garden during our ANZAC assembly. Foundation students made poppy wristbands, Year 1–6 students selected from a variety of activities including a paper-folding poppy, designing and decorating a poppy, or creating a silhouette art piece using dry pastels. In addition, Year 5/6 students continued to explore the art element of colour through painting and colour mixing. Using their colour wheels, they practiced mixing secondary and tertiary colours. To consolidate their learning, they were introduced to Alma Thomas, an American artist known for her colourful mosaic-like paintings. Inspired by her style, students sketched a landscape scene of their choice, lightly painted it with watercolours, then used acrylic paint and mixed colours to apply small brushstrokes to create a vibrant mosaic effect. It’s been a creative and meaningful start to the Term!

Culture Studies

Β

Β

This week in Culture Studies, students continued their exploration of Chinese culture, focusing on the significance of important cultural symbols such as the panda, dragon, and lotus flower. They learnt about traditional Chinese foods and had fun making their own paper fortune cookie, complete with a personalised message inside. Students also explored traditional Chinese clothing and had the opportunity to decorate either a male or female paper outfit with colours and patterns inspired by traditional designs. To consolidate their learning, students completed their China booklets, showcasing all the wonderful knowledge they’ve gained throughout our unit on Chinese culture.

PEΒ

After returning to school after the holidays all students started with a fun lesson of minor games and activities to remind them of the expectations of the PE lesson as well as having a fun return to school. Students in Prep to year 4 worked on some catching and passing skills while using netballs, and did some fun games with netball as a focus. The year 5 and 6 students started an introduction to Gymnastics.

In week two all students from prep to year 6 participated in a gymnastics lesson which will be the focus of PE for the next 4-5 weeks. The lesson started with a focus on some important formations including tuck, angry cat, seal, downward dog, front and side formations and a few more. Then we had a big focus on safety and how to fall safely so you don’t injure yourself. Students had a great time experimenting with their bodies and understanding better how their bodies move. The year 5 and 6 students extended their lesson to include a number of rotations including jumping, crawling, rolling and more. It will be exciting to see the students participate in some different activities involving using their body strength and formations.

LibraryΒ

Β

May is National Family Reading Month. The motto is "Read Every Day! Read More in May!"Β

Β

This month's aim is to encourage families to spend time reading together, and enjoy books.

In order to celebrate this, we have multiple events coming up at Le Page.

Β

A poster design competition will run until the 12th of May. Winners can get Scholastic Book Fair vouchers.

Β

On the 21st of May, it is Simultaneous Storytime Day. This year's book is "The Truck Cat" and we will be watching the live reading of the book and running some activities for any student who wants to get involved, as we have in previous years.

Β

From the 26th to the 30th of May, we are running our first Scholastic Book Fair of the year. These fairs are always immensely successful. Library leaders will get a chance to help out daily, and families can visit the fair before and after school that week to browse and buy books, stationary or posters.

Β

On the 26th of May, we are also starting our second ever Le Page Readathon! Last year, it was so much fun for the kids to read books and have family members and friends sponsor them for this. We will again give out daily spot prizes and big prizes every assembly for four weeks. The Readathon ends on the 20th of June. Last year, we raised $10k which was absolutely outstanding. Keep your eyes open for more info on compass and at assemblies.

Auslan Newsletter. Term Two. Week Two.

Hello everyone. We have begun our second term and the students have been enjoying some new games to help reinforce the language of Auslan. We start each lesson now by completing the daily wordle. The students use sign language to try and find the word. We are now playing more active and physical games in the classroom utilising different and varied ways of teaching and learning Auslan.Β

The grade 3/4 classes are also practicing the song β€˜What a Wonderful World’ for their upcoming concert later this term. They will be singing and using sign language at the same time. It really is beautiful to watch the students performing this song.Β
