Fantastic 3/4

Term 2 Week 2
3/4 Newsletter
Welcome to our second term already! It has been so lovely listening to everyone's adventures and stories over the holidays. The students have shown great positivity and motivation to get cracking into our second term. This filled us with so much joy and pride! The short week was a great way to slowly transition us into a busy and exciting term 2! We have an upcoming excursion to the Melbourne Museum on the 19th May, School photo day on June 2nd, and our amazing book fair on the 26-30th May. More information on all of these events and more will be communicated in the coming weeks, we are very excited for the term ahead!
Literacy:
In Reading, we have begun reading the novel ‘The One and Only Ivan’ by Katherine Applegate. The insightful story, written from the point of view of Ivan, a gorilla who lives in captivity with a number of other animals, has already introduced a unique range of questions and topics that will be explored throughout the term. We are using the story to build on our comprehension questions, to gain a further and deeper understanding of the book and its surrounding topics. The four different type of comprehension questions that we cover are:
- Right there - The author Said it. These are questions that are literal and can find the answers within the text.
- Think and search- The author meant it. These are questions that allow us to be a detective using clues to figure out hidden information or smart guesses on what you already know or see.
- Author and You- Show what you know. These are questions that allow us to make personal connections between ourselves and the text.
- On your own- What’s your opinion? These are questions that allow you to answer using your own thoughts, imagination and opinion
Phonics:
In Phonics, we have explored the a vs ar rule. This rule explains when you would use a or ar to make the ‘ar’ sound. When you hear the ‘ar’ sound, and then two consonants after it, it only needs an a. But if there are any other amount of consonants after the ‘ar’ sound, then it needs ‘protection’ and the ar are required. Of course, there are always rule breakers to every rule! The students have been practising writing and reading words using this rule, and other rules learnt last term.

Maths:
In Maths, students continue to work with their respective year levels to investigate vertical addition and subtraction (grade 3) and multiplication and division (grade 4). Through their learning of addition and subtraction the Year 3 students have been learning how to do vertical addition and subtraction sums using 1-3 digit numbers. They have also been exploring how to carry numbers when doing both an addition and subtraction sum. In year 4, we are using arrays to learn and understand the multiplication facts. The students are understanding that 5x3 means the same as 3x5. With a deep understanding of these multiplication sums, students will be able to continue building their multiplication and division skills through larger and more complicated sums and problems.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, we have begun our new topic, exploring the indigenous people of Australia and further understanding their cultures, stories and deep history within Australia.
