A Mother's Day Devotion: Words of Wisdom, Hands of Service
Based on Proverbs 31:26-27: "She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness."
Today, as we celebrate the women who have mothered us—whether biological mothers, adoptive mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, aunts, or spiritual mothers—we turn to the timeless wisdom of Proverbs 31. This passage paints a portrait of a woman whose value far exceeds precious jewels, whose character shapes generations, and whose daily choices reflect her deep commitment to those she loves.
"She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue." Think about the words your mother has spoken to you throughout your life. Words of encouragement when you doubted yourself. Words of correction when you strayed from the right path. Words of comfort when your heart was broken. Words of celebration when you succeeded. A Godly mother's words carry weight because they're seasoned with wisdom—not just human intelligence, but the deeper wisdom that comes from knowing God and walking in His ways. Her words aren't careless or cutting, but carefully chosen to build up rather than tear down. The faithful instruction mentioned here isn't harsh lecturing, but loving guidance that points to truth. It's teaching that comes from a place of genuine care for the spiritual and emotional wellbeing of her children. Her words become a compass, helping her family navigate life's complex terrain.
"She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness." A mother's work is never done. From managing household needs to coordinating routines, from preparing meals to creating a haven of peace, a mother's attentiveness to her family's wellbeing is a daily act of love and sacrifice. This verse isn't suggesting that mothers must be perpetually busy or that rest is forbidden. Rather, it speaks to the purposeful way a Godly mother invests her energy. She is intentional about creating a home where needs are met, relationships can flourish, and God's presence is honoured.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of mothers who speak Your wisdom into our lives and serve their families with loving dedication. We celebrate their immeasurable value and the countless ways they reflect Your character. For mothers whose words have guided us toward truth and whose hands have worked tirelessly on our behalf, we give You thanks. For spiritual mothers who have nurtured our faith and shown us Your love, we are grateful. Give all mothers the wisdom to speak life-giving words and the strength to serve with joy. May they know how deeply they are appreciated, not just today, but always.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Blessings!
