Homework

Homework Update @ OPS

As part of our ongoing commitment to support student learning and wellbeing, the School Improvement Team (SIT) has recently reviewed our approach to homework. We are trialling a new model designed to balance core skill development with flexibility and student engagement.

What's Changing

We will continue to prioritise regular reading and mathematics practice as essential components of homework. In addition, students will receive an optional Homework Matrix each term. A hard copy of the matrix will be sent home when the Term Overview is released via Compass, and will include a variety of fun, creative, and meaningful activities that reinforce classroom learning and promote independent thinking. Some examples include: interviewing an adult about their school life, creating something from recycled materials, or practising mindfulness exercises.

These tasks are completely optional and will not be marked, but they will be acknowledged if students choose to complete them. Our goal is to provide families with flexible options that support learning at home in a way that suits their routines.

Reading Expectations (non-negotiable):

  • Foundation to Year 2: Read a physical book for 10–15 minutes, 4 times a week + Nessy for 10 minutes, 2 times a week
  • Year 3 to Year 4: Read for 20–25 minutes, 4 times a week (preferably not from a screen)
  • Year 5 to Year 6: Read for 30+ minutes, 4 times a week (preferably not from a screen)

Mathematics Practice:

  • Foundation to Year 2: Mathseeds – 2 sessions per week (10 minutes each)
  • Year 3 to Year 6: Mathletics – 3 sessions per week (15 minutes each)

We will be seeking feedback from students and families as we trial this new approach.

Please note: We will review this new homework model at the end of the term and consider adjustments based on feedback and outcomes.

Thank you for your support.
