More Than a Game: Saints Excel On and Off the Court

The Marist Basketball team travelled to Melbourne to compete in the 2025 Marist Basketball Carnival, proudly hosted by Marcellin College. Facing strong competition, the team battled through the pool stage, finishing 4th overall after three hard-fought losses. Despite the early setbacks, the boys regrouped with determination and delivered dominant performances in their crossover games, showcasing their skill and resilience.

Their efforts culminated in a 9th place finish overall. However, the highlight of the trip came with the team’s triumph in the Men’s Plate Division, a testament to their perseverance and team spirit.

The carnival not only provided valuable on-court experience but also strengthened camaraderie and school pride. Austin Ehlich was named the team’s Most Valuable Player for his outstanding contributions throughout the tournament. William Imhoff received the Champagnat Spirit Award, recognised for his leadership, sportsmanship and embodiment of Marist values.

The players represented Saints with excellence, both in performance and sportsmanship, making the 2025 trip memorable and successful.

CISSA Sport

St Augustine’s CISSA teams have completed three consecutive weeks of fixtures against St Mary’s Catholic College, Trinity Bay State High School, and Peace Lutheran College. In Week 3, Saints recorded four dominant wins in AFL, Basketball, Football, and Touch Football against St Mary’s. Our only loss came in Volleyball, going down 2 sets to 0.

In Round 6, Saints faced Trinity Bay, recording wins in AFL, Basketball, and Touch Football, drawing in Football, and narrowly losing again in Volleyball, 2 sets to 1. Week 5 saw our squads take on Peace Lutheran College without our Year 10 students, who were away on work experience. Despite this, our teams rallied to secure a clean sweep across all five sports – our first for the term.

Our washout round will now be played in Week 6 against Redlynch State College, which is shaping up as a top-of-the-table clash across several sports. All teams are still in contention for Premier Division Finals, I wish them the best of luck ahead of the semi-finals in Week 7.

Year 7–8 AFLQ Cup – Mr Chris Lee

Over 40 students in Years 7 & 8 represented the College in AFL at the AFLQ Cup Schools Gala Day. Two teams were formed from the enthusiastic Saints AFL players, Team A and Team B. Team B battled gallantly all day, coming close to securing their first win in their last game of the day, however, they lost by less than a goal to Redlynch State College.

However, Team A were dominant all day, beating Saints Team B, Redlynch State College, St Andrew’s Catholic College and Newman Catholic College to secure the overall first place for the day. Team A will now travel to Townsville in Term 3 for the North Queensland AFLQ Cup Schools Competition, for a chance to progress to the state championships. Special mention to Xavier Sullivan who was voted by AFL Cairns umpires as the MVP of the day.

St Augustine’s Years 9 –10 AFLQ Cup squad competed in the local gala day in Week 4. The team went through the day undefeated to also seal their place in the North Queensland AFLQ Cup Finals in Townsville. Good luck to Mr Rigby, Mr Newman and our senior squad who will play their local gala day next Monday on the student-free day.

Bulls Masters – Mr Heath McKenzie

Saints cricket had the pleasure of a visit from some Queensland Bulls Masters cricketers. Andy Bichel, Adam Dale and Gavin Fitness spent time with some of our players, providing advice and some helpful hints about cricket and sport. Thank you for providing this opportunity for keen cricketers in Far North Queensland.
