Focus on Science

Welcome Back to Term 2!
We’ve had a fantastic start to the term in the Science Room. In our first week back, students took time to revisit and refresh our expectations for learning and behaviour, linking them directly to our school's SWPBS (School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support) expectations.
Together, we discussed what these expectations look like specifically in the Science classroom – including being safe during experiments, being respectful with equipment and each other, and being responsible learners by listening carefully and following instructions.
After our discussions, students created posters that clearly outline these Science-specific expectations and behaviours. Some of these posters will be displayed around the Science Room to remind and support students as we move through an exciting term of hands-on learning and discovery.
This term in…
Foundation
Students will delve deeper into material science. They will conduct investigations into the properties of different materials and explore how these properties help materials perform specific jobs. Through hands-on activities and guided inquiries, students will continue to build their observation, questioning, and reasoning skills.
Grade 1
Students will be continuing their exploration of living things, with a focus on plant parts, where living things live and how they grow and change over time. Through observations and discussions, students will build their understanding of life cycles, habitats, and the needs of living organisms.
Grade 2
Students will continue exploring material science, investigating what happens when different materials are mixed together, and how combining materials can create new objects with new purposes.
Grade 3
Students are extending their knowledge of biological science, exploring the life cycles of living things, making detailed observations, and discovering the importance of living things within food chains.
Grade 4
Students are continuing their study of chemical science, learning about the properties of natural and processed materials. They are investigating how the suitability of materials influences their purpose and use in everyday life.
Grade 5
Students are diving deeper into biological science, zooming in on living things within their environment. They are exploring how physical conditions of the environment affect the survival of all living things, including how some organisms survive in extreme environments.
Grade 6
Students are continuing their exploration of chemical science, learning to determine between solutions and suspensions, and discerning whether changes to materials are reversible or irreversible.
It’s shaping up to be another big exciting term of discovery, creativity, and scientific exploration!
