STUDENT  LEARNING

Celebrations of learning at Lucas Primary School

Prep Term 2

Our Prep students have settled very well back into the classroom and learning routines in Term 2. We have such an exciting term planned, with lots of learning, an excursion, and some other special events.

In Reading and Writing, students have continued to explore letters and sounds, and will have explored all letters by the end of this week. Sounds Write lessons have continued at the beginning of the Literacy Block. We are seeing such great improvement in the students' letter and sound knowledge, and also in their confidence when it comes to understanding the segmenting and blending skills being taught. We have started our guided reading cycle, which involves students reading in small groups with a levelled text appropriate for them based on their word knowledge. Students have also continued working on the skills of predicting, inferring and summarising. In Writing, students have continued writing simple sentences, using sentence starters and their learned sound knowledge to write descriptive sentences about living and nonliving things. Students are still focussing on capital letters and full stops, as well as adding adjectives to improve their writing.

In Numeracy, students have been exploring addition and subtraction strategies. This includes friends of 10 and counting collections. We have also been exploring Place Value, by playing games and using hands-on materials to focus on the difference between ones and tens. Students have also begun developing their skills of sharing into equal groups.

In Integrated Studies, we are exploring living and nonliving things and what classifies something as living or nonliving. We have already been on an excursion to the local Lucas Community Garden. Students completed a scavenger hunt activity where they had to find a number of living and non living things and tick them off their list! They were also spoken to by a couple of the volunteers who maintain the garden for our community. We will be learning lots about plants, different animals and their habitats, as well as nonliving things that can be found in the world around us.
