What's Happening in the Senior School

Year 5

What’s Happening in Year 5 in Weeks 3 and 4

Congratulations to our Cross Country runners. The focus and determination of the winners was inspirational!

The ANZAC biscuits were a great success. Some were pale, some were crispy, and others were just right. We know who followed instructions…!

Last Friday, we spent a session preparing for our winter sports. Softball mitts, hockey sticks, netballs and other equipment came out of storage.

Wellbeing

In their 4Rs (Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships) wellbeing lessons, Year 5 students will work towards understanding the qualities of a good leader and the importance of following rules and expectations. We are looking forward to our ‘Lead It!’ incursion this Wednesday.

Literacy & Language

Year 5 students are continuing to read the novel Black Cockatoo by Indigenous Australian author Carl Merrison. We are focussing on character development, vocabulary (words like endure, pry and glance), spelling (roots and affixes), sentence elaboration, direct speech and reading fluency.

Next week, students will write a narrative and practise writing interesting topic and concluding sentences. They will also complete sentences using the conjunctions ‘because’, ‘but’, and ‘so’.

Mathematics

In Maths, Year 5 students will be exploring the properties of numbers.

Knowledge Unit (Science)

In Science, we are investigating matter and sorting items according to their properties. Our capability focus is Critical and Creative Thinking. Students will be evaluating evidence and providing reasons for their decisions. Later this term, we will explore extreme weather events and geological changes.

Homework

Please encourage and remind your child to read regularly. Students are expected to read every night and record their progress in their personal diaries. Diaries must be brought to school each day and taken home each night. Classroom teachers will check diaries regularly to monitor reading habits. The student diary is also used to highlight important dates and reminders.

All students have also been sent home with Mathletics logins and assigned activities.

Year 6

What’s Happening in Year 6 in Weeks 3 and 4

Year 6 students have made a strong start to the term, diving into their new Knowledge Unit on Civics and Citizenship, where they are learning about the roles and responsibilities of individuals in Australian society. In Mathematics, they’ve been sharpening their skills in reading and using 24-hour, digital, and analogue time. Their enthusiasm for the new approach to spelling has been impressive, with students embracing the challenge and showing great progress. A highlight of the term so far was the Cross Country event, where students demonstrated determination and school spirit by pushing themselves to achieve personal goals and earn valuable points for their Houses. Their effort and attitude on the day were truly commendable.

Wellbeing

Year 6 students are learning to explore and understand positive character traits such as empathy, resilience, and integrity, while developing healthy relationships with peers. Through reflection and personal growth, they build the emotional awareness and social skills essential for their overall well-being.

Literacy

Year 6 students are engaging enthusiastically with the structured approach of Word Origins, deepening their understanding of word etymology. They are also building their grammar skills through focused and explicit instruction with the Grammar Project.

Maths

Year 6 students are diving into a comprehensive unit on fractions, with each lesson focusing on a different aspect. They will explore equivalent fractions, learn to add and subtract fractions with different denominators, and solve fraction problems involving shapes.

Knowledge Unit

In their Knowledge Unit, Year 6 students have begun exploring the diverse citizens that make up Australian society, discussing topics such as citizenship, passports, voting rights, and cultural backgrounds. They will continue to deepen their understanding of Australia’s states and engage in learning about our country’s political system.

Homework

Students are expected to read for a minimum of 15-30 minutes, five times a week, to improve their reading skills. Additionally, they will receive Mathletics tasks every fortnight to reinforce and build on their mathematical knowledge.
