What’s Happening in Year 3 in Weeks 3 and 4
Congratulations to our students for their incredible display of effort and persistence at their first House Cross Country event. It was a great experience for them to see what takes place at a Senior School sporting event. They pushed themselves and exceeded their own expectations, supporting one another along the way. Well done Year 3 students!

Year 4
What’s Happening in Year 4 in Weeks 3 and 4
Over the past two weeks, the Year 4 students have participated in both the ANZAC Day commemorations as well as the Years 3 to 6 House Cross Country event.
To mark the Gallipoli landing and to remember all our ANZACs, the school captains held a moving, whole school assembly. Following this, all students in Year 4 attached a handmade poppy to the school fence in gratitude for all the Australians who have fought for our nation.
The Years 3 to 6 House Cross Country even was held last week. Thank you to all the parents who assisted with the running of this day. It was wonderful to see all the children participating in the organised tasks and also encouraging each other to do their best. The students who are eligible, will compete in the district cross country event on Tuesday 20th May.
Wellbeing
Students are currently listening to a podcast called ‘Grow Your Mind’ during class sessions. The next two weeks will focus on how we find joy and tap into gratitude to support a positive mindset. We are also discussing how to be safe online as part of our e-safety unit of study.
Literacy
Students in Year 4 have commenced their first novel study for the year. They have been expanding their vocabulary and working on their fluency when reading. Our new spelling program, Word Origins is being implemented throughout the cohort. Students are learning about the origins of different morphemes and completing tasks based these morphemes. Writing sessions will continuing to be focused on sentence expansion and paragraph development.
Maths
The Year 4 students will be focusing on the processes of multiplication and division at the beginning of Term 2. The introduction of a ‘daily review’ at the beginning of every maths session will help students retain new maths concepts they have been taught throughout the year.
Knowledge Unit
Our Knowledge Unit in Term 2 will be ‘Civics and Citizenship’. This coming Tuesday 6th May, students will be participating in an incursion entitled 'Democracy, Community and Me'. Students will explore the fundamentals of democracy and government in Australia. They will examine the difference between rules and laws and how they are made to benefit the community. Students stand for mock-election to the local government while learning about preferential voting and absolute majorities. They participate in a local government council meeting role play, with costumes and props, to illustrate how local rules and laws are made for the community. Students take the role of Councillors and residents to contribute their opinions to the debate and to get to grips with the democratic process.
Homework
The Year 4 students are expected to read every night and record their progress in their personal diaries. It is the responsibility of the student to bring their diary to school every day and take it home each night to log their reading. Classroom teachers will be checking and signing these diaries regularly to monitor student reading habits. The student diary will also be used to highlight important dates and reminders. It is also encouraged that students practise their times tables, particularly the 2, 5 and 10 tables as rapid recall tests will soon be happening in classrooms throughout the term.
