Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge Participation

This week, a number of students from Years Three to Six took part in the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge, an international competition designed to encourage students to explore and develop their computational thinking and problem-solving skills. The challenge presents a series of engaging problems that require critical thinking and creativity to solve, covering a range of topics from logic puzzles to algorithms.

Throughout the challenge, students demonstrated enthusiasm, determination, and impressive problem-solving abilities. It was exciting to see them embrace the opportunity to stretch their thinking and apply their knowledge in new ways. We are proud of their participation and looks forward to celebrating their achievements as the results come in.

Science Talent Search and Maths Talent Quest – Open for Expressions of Interest

In case you missed it in our last newsletter, the Science Talent Search and Maths Talent Quest are now open to students from Foundation to Year Six who are interested in taking part.

Science Talent Search (STS)

This is a statewide competition that encourages students to think like scientists. They can choose from a range of project types - like doing an experiment, making a model, creating an invention, writing a science story, or designing a multimedia presentation. It’s all about exploring scientific ideas and showing creativity while learning more about the world.

Maths Talent Quest (MTQ):

This competition focuses on real-world maths. Students pick a topic or problem that interests them and use mathematics to investigate it. They present their findings in a project that shows their thinking and problem-solving process. It’s a great way for students to see how maths applies to everyday life in meaningful and creative ways.

If your child is interested in participating in either (or both!) of these exciting enrichment opportunities, please complete the Google Form linked below. I’ll be in touch soon with the next steps.

Upcoming VAGTC (Victorian Association of Gifted and Talented Children) Parent Seminars

We’re pleased to share that VAGTC will be running upcoming seminars to support families and educators of gifted and twice-exceptional students. These sessions will offer practical strategies and insights to help gifted learners thrive both academically and emotionally. We’ve added the seminar details below - be sure to check them out!

Monday 12th May, 7:30pm-9:00pm – Is it me or them? Navigating social life as a gifted child.

This seminar takes participants through some of the common social challenges faced by gifted children, including finding belonging, making (and keeping!) friends and navigating stressful situations such as teasing and bullying. Stories and strategies will be shared, along with common emotional experiences and predispositions which factor into the social development of gifted children. The session will be interactive, so please bring your questions and stories to share!

Melbourne University opportunities for High Ability students

The University of Melbourne offers two exciting enrichment programs specifically for high-ability students: the Research Challenge, which encourages students to engage in real-world research and critical thinking, and Micro Mathematicians, a program designed to enhance mathematical problem-solving skills. These programs provide an excellent opportunity for students who thrive on intellectual challenge to explore ideas beyond the standard curriculum.

Research Challenge

This challenge provides school-aged students with the opportunity to understand what it means to conduct mathematical and statistical research. It is free to enter and there are cash prizes of $100 - $500 up for grabs! To enter, students simply submit a project before the deadline. The challenge recently launched, and the problem booklets are now available! Our website also provides a brochure and flyer that you can use to advertise the challenge to students.

Micro Mathematicians

Micro Mathematicians is an enrichment program aimed at advanced students in Years Five to Ten who have an interest in mathematics beyond the classroom. The program offers a range of free virtual and in-person workshops throughout the year. Students will take part in a variety of activities across a range of topics designed to promote mathematical investigation at a high level. We have new workshops available in July, applications are being accepted until 11 June 2025. Students are required to apply with a parent/guardian.
