Academic Sport Program Highlights – Leadership, Community & Achievement
It’s been an exciting and rewarding time for our students involved in the Academic Sport Program this term, with recent events showcasing their leadership, teamwork, and commitment both on and off the field.
Western Bulldogs Leadership Workshop
Students recently took part in the Western Bulldogs Leadership Workshop, a dynamic session where they explored what it means to be a leader in the sporting industry. Through engaging discussions and group activities, students were able to identify, describe, and analyse different leadership styles while reflecting on the qualities of sporting figures they personally admire.
The Academic Sport Program students were able to visit Whitten Oval which was a highlight for our students. Students were able to experience a professional athlete environment, including having a kick on the ground.
Sunbury West Primary School Athletics Carnival
Academic Sport Program students also played a key role in the Sunbury West Athletics Carnival, where they led age groups throughout the day, guiding and supporting younger students with enthusiasm and care. It was a fantastic display of leadership in action, where students had to draw on skills such as:
Communication – clearly explaining rules of different events, encouraging participation, and cheering on competitors. A key highlight was our students running with the primary school kids to increase their motivation to finish a race.
Organisation – ensuring events ran smoothly and students were where they needed to be.
Inspiration – acting as positive role models to younger students from across the community.
Some of our students also took on official responsibilities, including timekeeping and using technology to record results, showing great maturity and attention to detail.
The day wrapped up with student relays, where our students got the chance to compete and have fun together, bringing energy and excitement to the final events.
We love opportunities like this to work in collaboration with Sunbury community primary schools—strengthening ties across schools and giving our students valuable leadership experiences in real-world settings.
Congratulations, Alice!
Lastly, a huge congratulations to Alice Metcalf, who has been selected for the Under 16 Basketball Vic Metro Team! This is an outstanding achievement and a reflection of Alice’s dedication, skill, and hard work. Alice will represent not only Victoria, but Sunbury College at the National Titles in July in Bendigo. We’re incredibly proud of her and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next.
