Senior School News

Year 5

Maths

In Maths this term, students began with measurement and geometry, exploring the differences between area and perimeter in both regular and compound shapes. In Week 3, they moved on to fractions, using multiplication and division to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers.

Literacy

The Year 5 and 6 students have been exploring the theme of health and wellbeing through their knowledge rich literacy lessons. With a focus on fluency and comprehension, students have engaged with a variety of texts that highlight important concepts such as emotional regulation, resilience, and maintaining a growth mindset. They have discussed how managing emotions and staying positive can help them overcome challenges, especially when things don’t go as expected. As part of their reading tasks, students have practised reading aloud with expression and pace, while also deepening their understanding of key messages in the texts.

In writing, students have been constructing complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions such as although, because, when, and even though to clearly express their ideas. They’ve explored strategies that support wellbeing, including hydration, building endurance, and caring for their cardiovascular system. These lessons have helped students make meaningful connections between their health and their learning, while also strengthening their skills in both reading and writing.

Year 6

Maths- In Grade 6, students have begun exploring fractions and 3D shapes. They are learning how to compare and order fractions by finding common denominators, often using the Least Common Multiple (LCM). To deepen their understanding, they also multiply fractions to find equivalent values, helping them recognise patterns and relationships. Alongside fractions, students are introduced to 3D shapes, identifying properties like faces, edges, and vertices.

Little Wilhelmina visited 5T on Friday. Don't let her face fool you she loved meeting the kids!

Confirmation

In Year 6, students have been preparing for Confirmation, including the meaningful step of choosing a saint's name. This decision is a personal and reflective part of the sacrament, allowing students to connect with a saint whose faith, virtues, and example deeply inspire them. The importance of choosing a saint lies in the powerful role saints play in the Confirmation process they serve as role models of holiness and faith, offering guidance and strength as students continue on their spiritual journey. By selecting a saint, students honour the Church's tradition and invite the saint’s intercession to help them live out their faith more fully.

Interschool Sport

On Friday afternoons, students have been participating in netball and football matches against other schools. Both our football and netball teams secured a win in the first week of competition. Our students displayed excellent sportsmanship towards their opponents and put in a strong effort to achieve victory on the day.
