YEAR THREE
ENGLISH
We are straight back into the swing of things in Year 3. Excitingly, the students have moved from 'Learning to Read' to 'Reading to Learn'! Not only is it an exciting step in the students' learning, it's an excellent opportunity for the students to engage in knowledge rich text.
Year 3 have started their second Novel Study for the year, reading, 'Yirra and Her Deadly Dog Demon', by author Anita Heiss. Based on the text, the students are focusing on 'factual recounts' exploring the 'History of the Australian Aborignal flag'. Already, they have been learning about the history of the Aboriginal flag. Within this, they have been looking at ordering information in chronological order, using time connectives and factual and key information. The students have started writing their introductions of their factual recounts. Additionally, the students have been learning about 'prefixes' and 'suffixes' and how they are used to change meaning or tense of base words. They have been required to transfer their knowledge of spelling rules to produce plural words using the suffixes 's' or 'es' depending on the end spelling of base words.
MATHS
The Year 3 students have now shifted further from consolidating Year 2 content in Term 1, to exploring new concepts in Term 2 of Maths. To kickstart Term 2, the students have been learning about fractions. In particularly, recognising 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/8 of both shapes and collections of objects. The students have had to identify missing fractions to create 'one whole'.
The Year 4 students have also started a new novel study this term, based on 'Uncle Xbox' by Jared Thomas. They have been looking at fronted adverbials of time and sentence expansion to make their writing more interesting and coherent. The students are writing a factual recount based on the 'Colonisation of Australia'. The students are practising their notetaking whilst reading and watching informative text.
Year 4 are continuing to learn about affixes (prefixes and suffixes), extending on the content learned in Year 3.
In Maths, the Year 4 students have been doing a topic on Measurement, looking at formal and informal units of measuring a variety of objects. They have been looking at 'cm' and 'mm', conversions of the two and comparing lengths of objects. They have also been learning about perimetre and area of 2D shapes using formal units of measurements.
As part of our Year 4 program, a different group of students visit the Nagle Kinder each week to connect with the students. This is a great opportunity for the students to not only display their leadership skills and represent Sacred Heart, it's also an invaluable opportunity to connnect with Kinder children coming to Sacred Heart in primary school. It was so heartwarming watching the Year 4 students so beautifully step into this role.
On Monday, the whole school took part in a Karate incursion. This was a great opportunity for the students to get a sneak peak the program offered before school by the Karate team. It's safe to say we've got some naturals in the Middle School!
