Why Asthma Action Plans matter at School
The importance of an Asthma Action Plan:
An Asthma Action Plan is a written plan completed by a doctor or health practitioner that explains how a student’s asthma should be managed. Victorian Department of Education policy requires schools to have an Asthma Action Plan for every student diagnosed with asthma.
The plan helps school staff recognise symptoms early and respond appropriately. It typically includes:
- The student’s usual asthma medications and when to take them
- Known triggers that may worsen symptoms
- Instructions for managing worsening asthma
- Emergency steps if an asthma attack occurs
- Emergency contact details and medical practitioner information
Schools use this information to guide their response and develop a Student Health Support Plan.
Keeping plans up to date:
The Doctors in School’s Program has a Nurse Practitioner who comes to KTHS on Tuesday's and is available for all secondary students who are enrolled at the school.
They can provide consults to help with all health needs including updating Asthma Action Plans.
Parents can be in attendance if they wish and the visit is covered by Medicare, therefore has no cost.
