CAREER SPOTLIGHT: Electrician
The growing need for skilled electricians.
The demand for electricians is expected to grow significantly in the coming decades as Australia transitions to a low-emissions energy system.
Electricity plays a vital role in almost every aspect of modern life, from powering homes and hospitals to supporting communications, technology and transport systems. As Australia continues to adopt new technologies such as solar energy, battery storage, electric vehicles and other renewable energy systems, skilled electricians will be essential in installing, maintaining and upgrading the electrical infrastructure that supports these developments.
Australia is already experiencing a shortage of qualified electricians, and demand is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. According to Jobs and Skills Australia, the country may need around 32,000 additional electricians by 2030, rising to approximately 85,000 by 2050 as more renewable energy projects, electrified transport systems and smart energy technologies are developed. Electricians will play a key role in connecting homes, businesses and communities to these emerging energy systems while ensuring they operate safely and efficiently.
For students exploring career options, an electrical apprenticeship can offer strong job prospects, practical hands-on work and the opportunity to be part of industries shaping Australia’s future. With the continued expansion of renewable energy and new technologies, electricians are expected to remain in high demand and will play an important role in supporting the country’s transition to a more sustainable energy system.
