Honouring the National Apology to the Stolen Generations

On February 13, Mater Dei Catholic College was honoured to send staff and student representatives to attend the local commemoration of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, following a gracious invitation from the Wagga Wagga City Council. We were pleased to join with representatives from Catholic schools across the Diocese.

This annual event marks the anniversary of February 13, 2008, when Prime Minister Kevin Rudd delivered a formal apology to the Stolen Generations. This apology addressed the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families by government agencies and church missions between 1910 and 1970.

A key recommendation of the 1997 Bringing Them Home report, the apology remains a landmark moment - the first time the Commonwealth Government officially acknowledged this "blemished chapter" of the nation’s past.

The commemoration featured a traditional Smoking Ceremony, a powerful ritual of purification and connection to Country. Following the ceremony, our representatives viewed the National Apology, reflecting on its profound historical weight and the continuous journey of healing.
