Term 2, Week 8
Welcome to the Grade 5/6 News Page
Week 9 Homework: 2 hours of reading and My Numeracy (at least 20 mins)
Week 10 Homework: 2 hours of reading and Big Write talk homework
In Reading, we will change our focus to creative texts. We will look at different styles such as narratives, short stories and poems.
Our Writing will link with our reading focus and work on creative pieces. This will be an exciting way to finish the term, where students will have the opportunity to practise a range of different techniques to evolve their fictional pieces.
In Mathematics, our weeks are broken into 2 sections. On Mondays and Fridays we focus on an Applied area of Mathematics and on Wednesdays and Thursdays, our students move into 'fluid groups' to develop their understanding of Number and Algebra.
Our Applied Mathematics topic for the remainder of this term, is Location and Transformation. During Weeks 9 and 10, students will continue to explore the grid reference system to describe locations and participate in some orienteering activities; as well as describe translations, reflections and rotations of two-dimensional shapes.
In our Number and Algebra Fluid Groups, students will continue our Fractions and Decimals unit. Each class will focus on an area of the curriculum that is relevant to students' specific needs.
In Topic, our Term 2 unit is called, 'Think Global, Act Local'. Students will learn about the biggest problems facing children around the world today. Just this week, we had a wonderful presentation from Eh Thout from Foodshare. For the next fortnight, students will brainstorm ideas and put a plan in place on how we can help our own community.
In STEAM, the Grade 5 students are enjoying consolidating their learning of how to use the Tinkercad program by exploring more complex designs and printing ideas. We are already seeing some amazing designs such as card holders, mini computers, bubble wands, placemats and dice.
The Grade 6 students are in the thick of creating their electricity design. We are seeing some fantastic ideas begin to come to life. All students have been reminded to bring in recycled materials (toilet rolls, cardboard, cereal boxes, shoe boxes etc) if needed.
